bolo question

i just ordered an aftershock, and i have a question. i have read that there were some complaints with the handle. is the new type of handle material not as strong as the old micarta? the one i ordered is a satin finish with serial number, and i do plan to use it hard, so that i may preserve some of my older busse from more abuse. any help would be appreciated

Hi Chris,
The serial numbered AfterShocks feature what I believe to be paper micarta handles, as opposed to the canvas micarta handles of the standard Combat line. There's little if any difference in terms of absolute durability or nuclear toughness, however, the paper micarta does have a slightly smoother surface texture. Because some feel that the canvas micarta provides a bit more grip security when the handle is wet, Jerry has offered to replace the AfterShock's grips with canvas micarta for anyone who would prefer this modification. You can contact Dave Roberson at Busse Combat for details.

Ranked in terms of duribility,it's my understanding that the most durable is the canvas micarta, linen micarta & then paper micarta. I cannot think of seeing or reading of any kind of test done to quantify the durability of the different micarta.

thanks for the responses, anyone know for certain, or know of any tests? i am really not that worried about it, i think it is more curiosity now. maybe Jerry knows for sure?

Canvas is by far the toughest and most durable of the three grades. Linen comes in second and paper comes in third. However, I have seen paper micarta handles that are thirty years old that have been abused for most of those years. They are still in great shape. The great news is that if anything happens to that paper micarta and it had the good fortune of getting attached to a Busse Combat Knife, it is guaranteed for life! We use the paper grade because it is much finer grained, thus presenting a finer "print" of the checkering and boy o boy does it look good!

Yours in Nuclear phenolics,

thanks for the response Jerry. i just got the knife and it is awesome to say the least. i cant wait to cut out a lock on the trunk of another car with this baby!!!!! anyway, one more question, do you sharpen the zero edge the same as other busse's stropping and ceramic rod, or is there a better technique.
thanks,
chris
