I would like to carve a groove or v line across my bolsters which are made of either titanium, nickel silver or damascus. Are these ornamentations usually made with file alone or...? Can't think of any other way other than milling machine. How do you make them? Thanks

I start with a jewlers saw and make a shallow cut so the file has somewhere to sit when I start using it. In the past I did not start with the saw cut and the file sometimes skated accross the finished bolster.

I use a round file and just work my way around.

Then I wrap a piece of 600 grit sandpaper around the file and polish the groove.

The first pic is of groves, the second pic is just saw cuts.
Hope this helps.

Hey Chuck those are both beautiful knives. I really like the simple accent that the jeweler's cuts gave to that second knife.

Is that damascus on the bolsters Chuck? If so, do you make this stuff yourself? :)

Mike,
The first knife has sterling silver and copper mokume bolsters. The second knife has damasteel damascus bolsters. I have made some damascus in the past but none recently.
Thanks,
Chuck

thanks Chuck, both materials are beautiful. Could you point me in the direction of your source unless you do not want to make it public, I will respect that.
Or should I just search? :) That would be fair enough.
