Bolster heat treat?

I have noticed a difference in etched colors of damascus for the bolster material and the blade material in finished knives, using the same material for both. The bolsters always appear to be a lighter grey than the blade, which etches to almost black. I have asked a few makers and they said the parts were etched the same amount of time. The only difference I can think of is the heat treating of the blade. Has anyone noticed this?

If the bolsters were heat treated would they come out as dark? And would you have to go thru the entire HT'ing process to obtain a darker color? Or could I, ,just heat to red and quench?

I'm working on a set of Eggerling mosiac bolsters and sure didn't want to mess them up!

I have never seen this subject addressed here, so I thought I'd ask.

Thanks for your time.

Thanks, Mr. Ealy. I was wondering if that was it. I didn't want to mess up some expensive material, I thought I'd better ask someone that knew the answer.

I have some of your damascus, too. Can't wait to give it a try. I picked it up from you at the Blade show, last year.

There is so much knowledge here. You guys really save us a lot of headaches!

Thanks again,
Kelly
