Bolt together 2x72 grinder

Hey, thanks for the plug for my grinder. It is made from only bolted together parts, I don't have a welder. It works work very well if I do say so myself. I'm sure it's no Bader but for a beginner maker like me it's a dream come true. My grinding technique is what needs work now!

Thanks!

Just an update, for those of you trying to make your own grinder. GET A BIG MOTOR. I burned up the little 1/2 hp craftsman that was on my home built grinder. I was profiling some mild steel into a blade pattern to begin learning how to grind and POOF, the motor started smoking and smelling terrible so I shut her down before a flame started up. I bought a 2hp motor for 79.00 from Harbor Freight as a replacement. It's not a TEFC but I plan on building a dust shield around it to try and help extend it's life. I think the old 1/2hp motor was already full of junk and grime, it had set up for probably 10 years before I started using it on the 2x72. You guys think a 2hp non-TEFC will last?

Thanks,
Derek

i have a motor from the 1950s . its a1 1/2hp open. it powers my coote grinder and i use the compressor to blow all the dust, grit, etc out of it. its been on duty for 3-4 years with me and lots more than that.

Derek,

I'm still using a Sears 1/2HP. You have to work slowly on them, or here is what I did... I put a huge bag of ice on top of my motor. :) It seems that this works because the motor housing is kept cool, and the air blown around inside the motor from the internal fan is also cold because of the cold motor housing, and so the wiring cools down fairly quickly.

That's pretty good Chang. If you get a chance there is a company called Fair Radio Sales. Been around since the beginning of time. They sell surplus electronics. I bought 6 of their 12 volt electric cooler compressors and mounted one inside one of my hotter computers. Worked like a charm. I may mount one in the motor enclosure for my grinder. Makes a little noise but not as much as the grinder!
