SMKW had some Buck knives on sale, a 503 and a 505 with "bonded stone handles". One knife is green and the other purple. I am curious about the handle material. Is bonded stone, really a stone material or maybe a fancy name for a plastic handle?

I thought I might get these knives as they seem unusual. I have notice them before and even asked this board about them, now with a better price, I am gettng even more curious.

By the way, the knives look more on the feminine side, especially the purple one. Definately not a hunting knife. Any help is appriciated. ;)

Its reconstituted stone, material thats been pulverizd and reformed with phenolic resins into an attractive workable scale material. These are Gents style knives, far from hunting knives.

I have two of the purple ones and one Snow Leopard and they are as strong as the 503s I have. They do look to nice to use on rough stuff but I carry mine some and they do well as carry-knife for everyday things. That is a good price in the SMKW catalog.

Reconstituted stone sounds stange, but I think I'll give it a try. I have quite a few 500 series and your right these little knives are Gents style knives. One of my 500 series knife that I bought in 1974 has a "fiberglass type" handle, so I know they use more than wood. Russell Payne, your right about the price being decent. I remember seeing the purple one for 63 or so dollars. For $22 and $20 it seems like a good stocking stuffer. Santa Clause is going to be nice to me this year. :)

Thanks for the help.

The knives came in today. I had a quick look at them. The scales were quite vibrant in color and extremely thin. I think if one looks at them, it is obivious it is not natural stone, since it would be extremely hard to cut stone that thin without cracks. Buck's process makes a really nice scale which is thin, strong and just as pretty as the pictures.

The green "bonded stone" was the nicest knife of the two. It also came in a black limited box, which I guess means it is limited to a certian number made.
