On 10/5 I was able to score this unique setup. Aunties pic, which is why it looks better than the rest of mine :)

Gorgeous rig, but the leather would soak up water at the touch so a bit of oiling was in order.

The stats are as follows:

22in in length

38oz

Thin for this size, it's 3/8'' at the bolster out to the shoulder, then tapers to 3/16" just before the tip.

The belly gets to 2 3/8" at it's widest point and the slim blade profile allows for VERY deep bites.

Given the weight I was surprised at just how forward the balance on this is, the balance point is almost at the shoulder a full 6 inches in front of the handle!

This forward weight made the handle ungainly for me.

SO.........................................................................

some shaving, some filing, lots of sanding, and a bit of oil later,

I took the ring off, went with an M43 inspired-clean look.

the grain on this satisal piece is beautiful. It will take several more sandings and oiling to bring it all out, this is still a work in progress.

given the style of scabbard this is in, I made up a paracord baldric to wear it

works like a charm

now we fit together just fine

Thanks for looking!

Big thanks to Warty (and the departed Walosi) for the inspiring ideas on wood treatments!

I really like the look of the handle without the traditional rings. It has very nice (almost sexy) curves. That wood has a beautiful grain too. What treatment are you doing? I have always used Tru Oil after sanding down to 600 grit, but I am curious as to what you are doing. So far your handle looks great.

Thanks for the compliment!

Right now I am using tru-oil. I first stripped the handle down using the soft-scrub method to get out the rouge. I actually sand to a 2000 grit then wipe down with acetone. The acetone helps pull out the fine particles left by sanding and allows the oil to penetrate. So far, so good, but I'm intrigued by other products. I may have to experiment a bit.
