So I've been looking for a knife for camping tasks, food prep, and whittling sticks for fun, nothing serious here. I'm no hunter, so I don't need a skinning knife. The Benchmade Bone Collector 15000(link at the bottom of post) looks to me like what I'm looking for, but I'm no knife expert and I had some concerns. Is the D2 steel good for whittling, or is the edge too brittle? A guy at work told me it's brittle steel for a thin knife, dunno. I'm not saying he's credible, just that he implanted the thought in my mind. What steel should I look for as an alternative if D2 is'nt the best option? My other question is they can come with the wooden handle, and that looks awesome, but I'm afraid it will weather and crack on me when I really need it. Is that a valid concern, or should I just relax? Their site is pretty convincing that their process of making those handles is strong. But my common sense says wood is wood... The not-so-good-looking sheath is no concern to me, I'll probably make a sheath for whatever I end up getting. Thank you for your input guys.

The guy at work doesn't know what he's talking about. Besides, 0.125" isn't that thin. I do a lot of whittling with a Queen whittler in D2 and I find that it works very well. The pen and coping blades on that little folder are less than half as thick as the knife you are looking at.

You can do a search on youtube for Benchmade BC whitling. I made the video and have a 10 degree per side (20 degree inclusive) edge. Works fine and good for other harder chores on a hunting farm. D2 is an old but underrated steel due to its age IMO.

I also think you will have no problems with D2, especially as BM does it. As far as I know, the walnut used on the Bone Collectors has been stabilized, so it should be good to go. The only thing I would watch for would be the edges where the "rib" section is ground, but even that should be good.:)

Sweet! Thanks guys for the responses, I was hoping it would be okay, I really like the look of the knife and it felt so nice when I held it at the store. I can't wait to get it!
