Bone Cutter Edge Bevel?

I hear that the bevel type is used on the SCAK and M43 as well. I'm just curious how exactly it differs from the bevels of other kukris. Info would be great - pics along with info would be even better!

Thanks in advance guys

I guess it varies by who makes them but the Bonecutters have a longer less steep bevel. Finer edge.

I don't have many khuks by the current Kamis but in the past Bura always had the thinner edges.

I have both the HI Bonecutter and the GK Bonecutter that the HI model was patterned after and both have some of the finest edges of any.

The M43 and the AK's I have had have always had steep edges. I often ended up beating small limbs off rather than cutting them. Now those were by Amtrak Kami that I had so I think it varies.

I thought bonecutter bevels were shorter and slightly convex but not exactly steep. This is the sort of edge bevel I have on the Super CAK.

The edge bevels on my regular AK are long and very thin. Almost as thin as a straight razor.

I have two M-43's one by Bura one by Sher the tiger. Both have a very nice thin edge. In fact both are equaly thin. Roughly 1/2 as thick as the Ang Khola edges. Also a wider bevel to the cutting edge. Bothtake an amazing edge and slice through materials very easily.

This bevel and thin edge combined with the improved physics and speed of the M-43 makes for a devastating cutter.

The bonecutters are heavier than the M-43's with the same exceptional edge geometry. They are slower, but their cutting ability is improved due to the edge geometry.

On the left are 2 of the original GK Bonecutters. They are beside 3 Ganga Rams. You can see the bevel is much longer on the bonecutters.

Notice also that compared to the HI Bonecutter I previously pictured they have much more of a smooth arc to the blade.

The first HI Bonecutters were almost identical to the GK Bonecutter except for being full tang. However as they have gone on the HI ones have started to have point on the spine where the angle changes instead of being smoothly curved like the originals. They are also losing the more "leaf" shape to the blade and starting to have more of a Ganga Ram shape.

Its a shame the shape has changed so much they used to be a very distinctive kurkri, I've also noticed the the recent pen knives have also begun loosing their shape as well.

I think it's sort of like the "Bo Diddly Beat" Bo Diddly did a lot of difft songs but they had that underlying beat.

The smiths make a lot of difft styles of khuks but if they aren't careful they all default back to a common shape. Unfortunately that shape is more angled than curved.;)

Hollowdweller, not to hijack this thread, but I am very interested in getting a Bonecutter, after handling one recently. Do you recomend hanging around the second hand market or getting a new one made? I handled a 16" model, and thought it was the perfect bushwacker.
Thanks, Gene

You might want to email Miss Yangdu, she may have one on hand....or keep a eye out on the DotD they've been showing up quite often...I think in the end you would be better off getting one from HI (along with it's warranty) than purchasing second hand.

Yeah in the past week there's been a couple of Bonecutters. I would wait to see if another pops up, or e-mail Yangdu and see if she has any left after the sales. Ask if she has a blem that you can work on and you can save a bunch of money. ;)

Thanks alot guys. Seems like the way to go is new!

GKK,

What they said. Not many for sale used. I can't remember ever seeing but 1 of the GK ones for sale and that was the bigger ones.

The HI one is the only one avail and I've not seen any of those sold secondhand. You're right. The 16 " one is really nice. The bigger ones are really sweet looking but too heavy to carry for me.
