Hello folks,

I picked up a real nice 16" Bonecutter. It's very well made on terms of finish and fit.

The kami mark is a crescent moon by itself. At first I thought it might be a Bura due to the quality but then I started wondering if it might be Keshar Lal. How can I tell the difference given I don't know the age of the khukuri?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Sincerely,

George

Does it have any English lettering on the other side of the blade opposite of the UB?

An L B would mean it was a Bura made prior to uncle Bill's passing in 2005.

My gut says it's probably a Bura. It was his mark up until a couple years ago when he just got too sick to work.

Some pics would help. Karda could probably tell at a glance.

I think KL only stated using it very recently. Is there a U.B. mark? That wouldn't be definitive either as I do have a Bura with the U.B. mark.

There is a U.B. on the side opposite the crescent moon mark. I'll try and get you guys some photos at some point today.

The only KL knife I have with the crescent moon is my hanshee and it's marked with the virbo pen. One my most recent one, the KLSK, he started using a different mark that looks like a spear.

Hey guys, sorry for the delay. I finally got a break to get some photos and get caught up a bit. Here are pictures of the Bonecutter:

I'm guessing a Bura - what do you think?

I say no, that's a Keshar Lai. He started making those last year.

The small cresent moom like that was Bura's from way back. His last few years working his moon became larger and more defined, I think it was easier for him to do it that way.

If you search through old DOD threads I'll bet you can find it here. Check Summer through Spring 2012-2013

Wow-you guys know so much. It's amazing! Keshar Lal it is. I really like his work and have seen a number of his blades so I'm still very happy. The fitment on this bone cutter is remarkably good. I'm very impressed about the fitment between the wood of the handle and the tang.

George,

In the post-U.B. marking days, I think Bura was usually too weak to swing the hammer himself, so most will also have Lachhu's mark. Here is Bura's mark next to Lachhu's on my U.B. marked Foxy Folly:

That BC is REALLY nice, by the way.

Phillll - I've had a few khukuris with that mark and didn't realize the significance - I thought Bura had just changed his style. Interesting. So Lacchu did the work with Bura's oversight. I had no idea.

I have a couple Vim/Lachhu marked blades as well. With Vim sick now, I think Lachhu will be the next "master" kami.

Edit: just remembered one of my Vim/Lachhus is from you! The 20" AK.
