Title says it all, what kind of boners are most used in your shop? Natural, synthetic, or both?

My computer is giving me fits right now, its geriatric and therefore cranky as an old donkey in 100 degree weather. :p Pics as soon as I beat my computer into submission.....

heh heh heh, he said boner, :p:rolleyes::D:thumbup:

Careful!

I just cut up an entire set of deer horns today... got 6 nice Boners... some big and some smaller. Now I need to sand the cut off edges so I dont cut myself! These should work nice.

PIC's!! Or it didn't happen! :p

Antler can get scary sharp huh? I jabbed myself a few times on "The Guyons" boner.

er

that didn't sound good at all huh. :o

Did you at least get a biscuit outta the deal?

:D

I haven't had a boner in so long....I don't even remember how to use one;)

On the serious side, I have one fashioned like the old whale bone curved bones. It was made from the shin bone of a White Tail Deer and works like a charm.

I have to admit, I was chuckling through this entire thread LOL.

Do deer antlers really work that well? I have a set I cut off a deer this past fall that are not really that nice to use for handles and was thinking about making a few...boners... ;)

Question: why would you need so many (referring to the pic above), unless you sell them?

:D

That's the conundrum! I didn't get a biscuit! All I got was a friggin Tee shirt! :p

Paul, my friend, your not in a one man boat, good boners are harder to find, the older and fussier you get.... :o the longer and harder they are to find, er, what was that??

Whiskey, darn boy! You aint longing for a good boner!!! Must be a young man thing! I cant find one to save my life! Every one I get falls all to pieces in less than five minutes. :p

GrizzlyBear, Yes! Whitetail does make for a good boner, er, deer that is. Not as firm as Elk, but, well, does size really matter? Wait, What?

Who is getting into my account!? I blame the wife!!!!! :grumpy:

Got the pics of my boners! :D

This one was made for me by Dan Koster way back when, its a rib bone, works like a charm as a slicker

These are some antler pieces, center is a nice white tail with a nifty scalloped tip, the other two are elk.

Lastly are my synthetic boners, er, yea, that....
Top and bottom are Tandy specials, the second one is a very stiff bone like material, no flex at all, the other is simple plastic. I got it at the fabric store for next to nothing. :)

Mine are Mule Deer and the reason I have 6 of them is simple. Once I cut off 1... the rack looked pretty silly so.... I cut the rest off and tossed the rack. It was my smalled rack... still, my wife was shocked to see it cut up! ha ha

I'd like an Elk tip... that might be a little fatter. A fatter boner might works better, making fatter lines.

I also have the Tandy one but it has a nice mold line.. maybe I need to buff that boner off a bit.

Synthetic boners...bwahahaha

:D Well, sometimes ya gotta do what ya gotta do. :p

Whiskey, very true, you can get some really thick points when you polish those elk antlers down, and they're so dense that they dont wear easily. Dont forget to oil your antler boner with mineral oil occasionally so they stay nice and bright, and they like the attention too. :)

The synthetic boners (heh) from Tandy all come with a flash line that needs to be sanded off. Once polished down nice and smooth though it will be one of the most versatile boners you ever have, really. :D

I use an antler I cut up and a 'Martha Stuart' bone folder, same thing you can get at Tandy for a little under half the price! Synthetic and natural boners can play nicely together depending on what your working on :D

OMG I'm really laughing now. The fact that you have 'stroker' in your name doesn't help much! ;)

Jon Walker- They are used during wet forming of sheaths to knives and guns. They allow you to press the leather to the form of the item without marring/gouging/scratching the surface up. Different shapes and sizes work for different applications.

Martha Stuart Boner??? well, uhm, yea! I guess so! :D

Now I feel dirty..... :p

Here are the boners I use. The antique bone hook with the turnings works great for belt edges up to 10 oz in the black turning. The bone with the antler handle is Moose leg bone, the antler tip I use the most, the other two are Mammoth ivory.

Best regards
