I'll Start this thread. Please add to it.

Boo Boos whether out of ignorance or greed can really put a damper on a knife purchase by the un-aware. I can see the look on a persons face when they open a box received in the mail and look inside and pull out something entirely different than what they thought was coming.

The one statement that bothers me the most is an Uncle Henry with a REAL stagalon handle. The last stagalon was shot about a century ago. Stagalon is Delrin which can still be hunted in South America.

The second thing is the size of a knife.
Pictures are deceiving without a size reference and yes size does matter.

I recently saw a Boker on Ebay described as having a pearl handle. The seller had clearly done their homework on the knife. They recognized the nickle-silver bolsters and pins and even gave some history on Boker. Power Sellers never screw people, right Ebay?

The knife in fact was celluloid. Not only that, the celluloid was shrinking in a big way and I could see a lot of aggressive, fresh-looking orange rust. It was clearly breaking down.

The lesson here is basically do your homework before you buy or be prepared for a disappointment.

Well, I'll be the first to admit,
b8a3gx.jpg

I thought this knife was a little bigger.
It's 2 3/4" end to end.
However it is still a mint 106OT and I have come to appreciate it.

I'm not sure if the description can be considered a Boo Boo but I always like this type.....

...This knife has what might be a small crack near the center pin on the mark side, a tiny, tiny chip on the corner of the pile side scale, slight signs of pocketwear show on the bolsters, a few pepper spots on the blades, but it doesn't appear to have been sharpened. Even though I consider it to be in mint condition, I'm setting a very reasonable reserve. Yada, Yada, Yada........

I have bought 2 or 3 knives on eSpray that have caused me to fall out of my office chair when I received them. Nothing expensive, since I prefer to handle those first, or know the maker..... but, REEEEEEALLY now.....!!

WHATEVER!!

P. S.
I don't really have any seconds/mistakes in the Schrades I own. They have all been top notch.

All Uncle Henrys look alike, right? I mean, staglon is staglon, and production knives of a feather have little varience in coloration and pattern. I have been on the lookout for the odd colored 897UH's, and bought one with hues of purple, yellow and red in the accent color where it was buffed to the bolsters and pins. What I received was a far cry from what I bought. So I e-mailed the seller asking what the deal was..."do you still have my knife?" Well, he "honestly" didn't know that there was any difference in them til I pointed it out to him. He had sent it out to another buyer. One picture for eight knives. Now, being a "good seller", he offered to refund. Let's see. "I send you back the knife ($3.85 postage) after paying shipping here ($4.85) and a money order ($1.00). Then you mail me a refund for the purchase price. So I am out a ten-spot because you sold me a knife you didn't have? The seller has agreed to find me a similar knife for approval now.

Another seller's listing said 14OT and went on to describe it. The picture was of a 13OT though. Well, I won it cheap, but did I buy the knife in the picture, or the knife described? It will still be a good deal on a 13OT if that is what arrives, but it was a 14OT that I needed, so that would be the better deal. We shall see what we shall see.

Another boo-boo that I am sure wasn't purposeful by the seller. A private edition mint in the box had the wrong papers and those were used to describe the knife. Again, it was rare and cheap, so since I am not a box and paper collector, I bought it. And maybe some day the right knife for those papers will come along.

Deception comes in many forms. Sometimes we deceive ourselves, and sometimes someone helps us out.

Staglon is the natural horn material of the Nauga ( spelling??? ) from which you get Nauga Hide. This is related to corinthian leather used to cover the seats of the now extinct Cordoba. This was explained by the likewise extinct actor Ricardo Montaban. Also known to Star trek fans or trekkies as Khan who's most memorable line in the movie star trek II was something along the line of VENGENCE is a dish best served cold. I do not remember if Vengence was the exact word but it is the same meaning.

That being said Boo Boos are a two edged sword. I know I have bought some dandy items due to the sellers ignorance. I also know that since I also have sold items, both at shows and ebay and have been ignorant of what they really were and were worth. It goes with the turf. My rules of conduct for my self are not real slow or real fast kind of half fast if you get my meaning. I will tell a buyer every thing I know about an item good or bad. Especially if a specific question is posed. I also will tell if asked what I feel is a fair retail price and then what I will pay which is not retail. Or if there is something I really want I will pay whatever I have to, to get it. In other words I will not lie and will only state what I feel to be necessary. However after I have said everything I feel relevant you have to ask if you want to know more.

There is no more truth on ebay than there is anywhere else. The best policy ebay ever came up with was a lie. It used to be the ebay police would take off any automatics that were complained about. What this ment was that when a really nice espensive automatic came on the big boys would wait in the rafters and when the price went to high they complained and the item was removed then they would try to cut a private deal with the seller. It was pure Bullshite especially on a 100 year old knife that no one would have any use for other than display. So Ebay researched Cal law and found out that there particular version of the idiot auto law allowed for switchblades 5 CM or less. I think about an inch and a half. Now all you have to do when you put an ad on is to say that the item complys with the ebay 5 CM rule when obviously most of these knives are much larger. It is A lie and it pisses me off but at least you can now buy and sell these artifacts as well as all the new imported junk ( which helped put Schrade out of business . ). I also add to any item that if the buyer is not satisfied for any reason money will be refunded in the case of an automatic this allows for the chance that some buyer actually thought he was getting a Hunters pride ( or similar Knife ) with a 1 and a half inch blade. However I have never heard of someone spending hundreds of dollars for a 100 year old knife and not knowing what it was. frankly I very seldom sell autos on ebay. I really don't have or presently want to for several reasons. In the case of other items one of the benefits of having a book out on a subject means people who may have expertise in other fields become accessable to you I know people who know swords military memorabilia ect it expands your world when you can ask someone a question. It recently saved me 5000 dollars. You mean that really wasen't Adolphs personal dagger DUHH. Oh well no one always hits a home run.

So rather than deriding those who through accident or design make mistakes in these listings I would like to see just the listing of the item and then let the readers of this thread comment on what is wrong with the particular listing. This would allow discussion and enlighten all of us as to what to look for and understand more of the subject. Again only an opinion. In the meantime (LET THE BUYER BEWARE). LT

Schrade knife #171un brass guard antler handle

51/2 blade 10'' over all

11/2 wide blade with lardg stone carried and used

recon marine vietnam

69-70
Come on how can you be upset with a guy like this he is confused. It is apparently a un (United Nations) issue obviously a proto type used at least 2 years before the first commercial version was issued in a style ( flat butt) not available until the 80 tys. it has the famous 51/2 blade the 11/2 wide blade the famous lardg stone and used for recon missions in Vietnam, and please do not forget the antler handle made from the now famous Nauga Stag. But the good part is that it has 4 days to go and is only at 9 dollars. So do you inform the seller of the mistakes NAA I don't think so. Just bid 10 or fifteen and hope it slides under the radar. Perfect example codger. I fear there will be to many to address them all. LT

Awww, don't tell me I stumped the panel on the second one. Just look closely at the pictures.

6556471443 One hole usually 2, some had one. I created a monster I will not and do not want to answer all these alone it is supposed to be a forum. LT

Yes, the first ones had two holes, then one teardrop hole, then one round hole. But.....where should the hole be located (and the stamp)? OK, so it was punched and stamped backwards, on the chisel end. Or my eyes are worse than my doctor says. This is a factory boo-boo, not the sellers. Or mine for mis-seeing what it is I think I am seeing but not seeing right. You see? Right?

I looked close at that it is hard to tell but looking at the pic where it is partially in the sheath It looked right. Hard to tell. This guy seems to know knives I think he would have spotted this. LT

Ahhh... so I didn't see what I thought I saw. Then we go back to my earlier post! If I had been going to bid on it on the premise I presented, I would definately have asked the seller about the stamp position. I learned this the hard way with the multi-color 897UH, assuming that all sellers post pictures of the items for sale. We all know what happens when we assume.

PS- Here is the "Deerslayer Eagle" I posted about earlier as well...I knew the difference but did not tell the seller. My bad. Even without the box, the knife itself was worth this to me. 6552971703

You'll get a kick out of this one. Prior to the end of the auction, I informed the seller of his error. To his credit, he told the buyer and gave him the option of cancelling the deal:

This listing is for a "Schrade Crimshaw" and is too funny for words:

This knife is Brand New and in Mint Condition!! This one has never been sharpened and has never been used! Comes with its own Schrade sheath and original paperwork! The blades operate perfectly are very firm and tight with no play. The tang reads, "Schrade U.S.A. SC505" While the two large blades are open it measures 9 inches and it is 3 7/8" with the blade open.

They're making these everywhere now......Could be a Russian version....."Camirade" ?

I'm chalking that one up to a disinterested seller... :(
