I just picked up Camping and Woodcraft by Horace Kephart, which was published in a one volume edition in 1906, but is a two volume book.

I've only flipped (ie: looked at pictures for now) through it, but it looks pretty good.

Anyone here pick it up before?

Actually I have a first printing hard copy which is in "decent" shape and then read/use the most recent publication. I find the original has more photos and captions. At least one of original photos would now be considered politically incorrect and perhaps this is why it is not found in the newest edition.

I had it. Lugged it around reading it whenever I could. Loaned it to a friend of my son who moved back to NY with his mother and my book.:grumpy:

It is a very good read. You'll enjoy it. I keep meaning to replace mine. Who knows. Maybe the book will get the kid into the outdoors and woodcraft.;)

I have one of the newer versions and find it to be a fascinating read and chock full of useful information. He does, several times, refer to African Americans in some not PC terms, but in the day, I don't think he meant to be derogatory. Some, however, may find that a bit offensive.

I don't know about the pictures though. Mine has many, but not the originals spoken of.

I got my copy autographed buy his great grand daughter, who runs the Horace Kephart website, & also signed buy his grandson & great grandson, two weeks ago in Bryson city N.C., at the Horace Kephart days festival. It is a very good outdoor book. also took pics of the huge bronze plaque, that sits on top of a huge boulder that marks his grave.

I came across it by accident in a library, while doing my apprenticeship. I've read it a dozen times at least. My favorite outdoorsman by far.He has apparently studied and payed attention to almost everything in the woods, and I've put into practice a lot of his concepts, and they are just as valid today as they were back then. ( We have more and better gear now,but the gear he used back then got him through it all.)
His book on Camp Cooking has a lot of good easy recipes also, and his straightforward, no bs approach makes for a good read. One of my top favorites.

I have looked in a lot of used bookstores for this one, no luck. I ordered a new copy through Barnes and Noble. Great book.

I`ve got an early edition, and bought the softcover a few years ago to save wear and tear on my old copy. One of the best out there!
