I recently read somewhere about how doctors' knives were used to cut or count out pills, grind things up or even as a scalpel in a pinch. I thought that was pretty interesting.

But what about the Congress? Trapper? Stockman? Butterbean? Where did the rest of the patterns come from and what are they really for?

I justed started getting interested in collecting some of the more traditional pocket knives and I was wondering if there was some kind of book that discusses the patterns in the way I learned about the doctors' knives above?

Check out "Levine's Guide To Knives and Their Values," but don't get the fifth edition. You an order it directly from him. Check out his forum, he has a link at the end of his signature. Lot of info on patterns.

Lot of good books at Knife World too.

The Standard Knife Collector's Guide (3rd Edition)
by Roy Ritchie, Ron Stewart (Contributor) (Paperback - November 1996)

is a very good choice for explaining patterns.
