Anybody ever read Hatchet to their children by Paulsen? More of a boy survival story, there is also a sequel to it.

Yes, and I liked it very much. It is mentioned regularly in book lists on this forum as a must read novel. I need to read some more of his stuff though.

That was one of my favorite books as a boy.... Love it. Read it probably 20x growing up.

All of Paulsen's stuff is pretty amazing. Worth a read even as an adult, I think. I don't remember the name of it, but one of his books describes his childhood, in which he had to hunt for a lot of the food his family ate. Really interesting guy, and Hatchet and its sequels do a really great job of describing life in the wild, and life in general.

I've read it, and already have a copy set aside for my 3 year old great Nephew, can't wait for him to learn to read!!!!

Oh yes, I remember this book well

I actually really liked "Brian's Winter," it's about what would have happened had he not been miraculously rescued at the end of "Hatchet."

It goes into some detail about surviving the winter and hunting. IMO, it was my favorite of the series.

You guys should definitely check out "Brian's Return". It's the third sequel to 'Hatchet'. It describes Brian's frustration with civilization and his return to living in the wilderness.'

Something, I think, many of us can appreciate.

My wife bought about 40 copies...she uses it for reading in middle school. My son (10 years old) just finished it and loved it. He wants the sequels now. Great book for all ages!

read all 5 of them to death. Hatchet, Hatchet: Winter, The Call, The Return, and the Truth.

all great books.

Yup. Read a few of his books. Even as an adult they are good. And My side of the mountain +1

During final exams this year when I had none to grade, I read his most recent called Guts about his inpiration to write his short stories. Paulsen really had an interesting upbringing and he sounds like the real deal. Hatchet is by far my favorite but this most recent was a fun quick read.

His best line in the whole book is, "People ignore the truth in favor of drama." Sounds a lot like knives for show vs. go and much of survival philosophy.

I haven't read Hatchet yet been meaning to. I did read My Side of the Mountain in 6th grade and loved it. Of course the book is better than the movie. I had a copy of it that my mom took to school to read to her elementary students.

My daughter is empathetic enough that I haven't read her Hatchet yet - it just takes a while to get past the mother's stuff. She may have some trouble getting past certain plot points. Or not, she's goofy like that. My Side of the Mountain series, OTOH, she loves.

I lost track of how many times I read that book throughout elementary school (and even junior high :D). Anytimes I had a book report to do I picked Hatchet, or another Gary Paulsen book if he/she was super strict. I am still searching for similar books now that I am in college to read, but tend to just grab some non-fiction books :)

i used to be obsessed with paulsen my favorate was the mr tuckett series about a young teenager being taught the ways of life by a mountain man type with one arm...also the rifle and dogsong were staples.... the my side/farside of the mountain saga as well as the third book were also great reads...these were the books i sustained on when i wasn't camping with the scouts

I read Hatchet again last winter after reading My Side of the Mountain. Both books are great, my wife got me all the sequils to Hatchet for Christmas.

I read it as a kid and just recently remembered it. Like how he built that water trap to catch fish, or when he retrieved that survival kit from the submerged airplane which led to his rescue.
