I've lost count of the number of threads I've read and the number of times someone points out a better steel for my purposes.

Is there a book on this topic? An authoritative source?

John D Verhoeven, Professor of metallurgy at Iowa State University, wrote a text which he distributed gratis.
Metallurgy of Steel for Bladesmiths & Others
who Heat Treat and Forge Steel


That is about as authoritative as it gets.

If you do some Googling for his name and the title you can find a free copy on the net.
