The Osprey Men-at-Arms series recently came out with #293, 'The Northwest Frontier,' ie. the NW frontier of colonial India (Assam and the Burmese hills). This area was populated by fierce jungle tribes that gave the British lots of trouble, and against whom they increasingly employed Gurkhas.

It's good reading, and leaves you awestruck thinking about the savage blade-duels that must have taken place between Gurkhas with their Khukuris and Nagas with their Daos.

Also check Men-At-Arms #324 "Northeast Frontier 1837-1901, #268 "British Troops in the Indian Mutiny" and #219 "Queen Victoria's Enemie's, India".

Good books all and getting to their resources takes some doing but has more interesting info.

Ruel.
I guess the correct phrase should be:

... The British gave lots of trouble to those tribes which populated the area of Nagaland, and against whom they increasingly employed Gorkhas ...

WOW! Sometimes ... somewhere ... somebody has to see history according to new perspective! LOL!

NEPAL HO!

We ex-colonials in the USA would say that we caused the Brittish trouble and against us they increasingly employed Hessians and native American tribes. We take more pride in giving trouble than surmounting trouble.

1. Mohd: You're absolutely right! I can't believe I of all people wrote that. It was the British who were there real troublemakers, like all conquerors. Reading the book, I couldn't help but cheer on the Tribesmen, despite knowing the historical outcome. (I had the same feeling reading about the Anglo-Nepali wars too.)

2. John: You're right, it's #324, not 293 as I had mistakenly typed.

I blame both mistakes on staying up late.(:

Can anyone get in on this ? Hey , Jeff , how about "The British were giving the colonials trouble ,so the colonials increasingly employed the French and Spanish " or how about this " The Americans were giving the British trouble , so the British marched in and sacked Washington " or this one "The Indians were giving the Americans trouble , so the Americans employed other Indians , not to mention scorched earth tactics " . Wait ,just one more "The Branch Davidians were giving the ATF trouble , so the ATF increasingly employed the Federal Bureau of Incineration " Oh,yeah , here`s one for Mohd "The Communists were giving the Malayans trouble , so the Malayans increasingly employed the British and the Gurkhas" Cheers ,fellas .Mark

That's more like it.

Glad you got a chuckle out of my post ,Uncle Bill . Rusty ,I got a kick out of yours "He hit me back first"Good one .Tom, the British may have been in the wrong in Nagaland ,but it`s not a foregone conclusion . Like Uncle Bill says it`s a matter of perspective. No doubt both sides felt that they were justified . I intend to read up on this subject ,starting with the titles mentioned at the beginning of this thread . If anyone knows of some books which tell the story from the Naga`s perspective ,please let me know . Cheers,Mark

One thing not commonly known is that Abraham Lincoln signed the order for 38 Nakota Sioux to be hanged on Dec.26th 1862. They were defending what little land they had left given to them by the government by treaty. This was carried out at Mankato Minnesota on that date.

There is much, much more history that isn't common knowledge about this country. The winners always get to write the history books.

I can't remember who ... but ... he said: THE WINNER MAKE THE HISTORY! --- I guess the loser in any sort of struggle is just have no words that carry weight!

Today --- this very moment --- a lot of struggles every where on this globe! The stronger & the winner will have the right to write a new history according to his own will ... the weaker & the loser just have to stare blank!
