I want to learn what all the terms used for the steel on blades means, and would like a nice book or whatever to study that. Any help? Thanks

I remember getting passed that several years ago. :) Still have it bookmarked....

I just printed that out and am ready to go in and sit in my big chair and start reading. Watch the Braves-Brewers game in between. Thanks to Joe Rowland for this fine piece of work, and thanks to the members who told me.

Do a google search for Verhoeven's Metallurgy for Bladesmiths text, and then search for Alloying Elements in Steels and Principles of Heat Treatment by E.C. Bain and company. DO NOT READ THESE WHILE WATCHING A GAME. Your head may look like the pigeon Randy Johnson hit with a fast ball.

Admittedly, they are all a bit heavy if all you want is basic information, but the Bain books were written from the beginning of modern steel metallurgy and a lot of what we know now is built on Bain and companies findings, or similar independent findings in other countries.

Thank you for all these books. I am a reader and studying is my passion. I will get them just for reference and slow study if nothing else.

Ha! I saw Randy hit that bird. Baseball is my favorite and I live in north Georgia, so you know my team...The Braves just won 2-1 over Brewers.

Can't learn without studying.

I had to settle for a PDF(8Meg) but have it saved and can read as I like. Thanks again. No copies anywhere I looked.

Material properties and processes as related to metals is a very diverse and interesting field of study. Depending on how academic you want to get, I may be able to recommend a few text books next time I go home.
