Can anyone recommend and good survival based books, such as books with general bush craft or urban survival info. Im also interested in the very specific books that would focus on hunting and gathering. I'm just looking for a good read that will increase my general knowledge on survival and the wilderness.
If you have links to where i can buy them to that would be great.

hands down my favorite is "bushcraft" by mors kochanski.

also, the two books by cody lundin: "98.6 degrees: the art of keeping your ass alive!" and "when all hell breaks loose: stuff you need to survive when disaster strikes" are excellent to have too since they cover urban survival too instead of strictly in the woods. all are available from amazon.com.

Books are great supplements but nothing beats or accelerates competence/learning better than either a class(s) with a highly effective instructor and/or mentoring with someone (paid or a friend).

The most effective way I learned was when i spent a week in the wild with a professional hunting guide and wilderness instructor. That experience was worth it at twice the price.

I concur Bushcraft ^^^^ is a good place to start.

I recently read a review for "Hunt Gather Cook" by Hank Shaw. Looked pretty interesting, and the excerpt was well written.

I got the little orange "SAS survival guide" as a stocking stuffer. It was a surprisingly interesting read. I doubt it is very expensive and is good to read while travelling.

I like reading online and I like the older outdoor stuff. A lot of wisdom to be found there. Try Francis Buzzacott's Masterpiece (c. 1913), subtitled "The Complete Hunters', Trappers, And Campers' Library Of Valuable Information". It is archived in the Library Of Congress.

Earlier editions are archived elsewhere. I read the 1905 edition the other night.
