I have read about halfway through the third book in the trilogy and I have to say that I have found it to be like the first two, excellent speculative fiction. The series is about an Allied Carrier Task Force from the year 2021 that is trying to halt ethnic cleansing in an Indonesia where Islamic fundamentalist extremists have taken over. The Task Force is made up of ships from many nations, including the USA, Australia, Great Britain, Japan, and France. All of these ships are using very advanced 21st Century technology. An experiment aboard one of them suddenly dumps them in 1942 in the literal midst of the US Navy ships steaming to the Battle of Midway. All Hell is literally let loose by this sudden invasion of 80 years worth of technological development AND social change.
I had actually posted a halfway jesting post about the series when I first encountered it at http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=312359&highlight=weapons+choice but I will say that any reservations that I might have had about the series were mistaken. Birmingham writes very good speculative alternate history type fiction.
The three books are:
1) Weapons of Choice
2) Designated Targets
3) Final Impact
Here is the Amazon listing for the first one: http://www.amazon.com/Weapons-Choic...3638509?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1173468507&sr=1-2. If you like alternate history, I recommend them to you.
