It's that time of year again.. good ole Christmas...

I've got family asking what I want for Christmas and my first reply was "Books" how 'bout some good ole fashioned books?

I'm kinda trying to get a few on Primitive living/ bushcraft, etc. especially with a focus on the Northwest/Alaska.

I was wondering what y'all might suggest?

Thanks for any input!

Hey, theres this book im reading call Dogsong by Gary Paulsen. It's about a boy and he lives in alaska. Things are changing to more modern and he goes to this guy named Oogruk to talk about the way things were before. He then hunts and stuff and trains a dog sled and he leaves his town to go somewhere more primitive. Not done the the book yet but I'd say it's worth checking out. Not the best book but it's still pretty good.

IMHO, the best book for your purposes would be: Northern Bushcraft, Mors L. Kochanski, Lone Pine Publishing, 1987, ISBN# 0-919433-51-0 This deals specifically with the northern forest environment. I believe it is now republished under the name, 'Bushcraft' which makes it one of 3 called the same.

The other two, Bushcraft, Richard Graves, Schocken Books, 1974, ISBN# 0-8052-0333-8 (a book, that is free to download), and Bushcraft, Ray Mears, Hodder & Stoughton, 2002, ISBN# 0-340-79258-2 are also excellent books.

A couple others I highly recommend are: Primitive Wilderness Living & Survival Skills, John & Geri McPherson, Prairie Wolf, ISBN# 0-89745-997-0 this is about as basic as you can get;

Outdoor Survival Skills, Larry Dean Olsen, Chicago Review Press 1990, ISBN# 1-55652-084-0, this was one of the 'bibles' of primitive skills and started a lot of people on the path; and

Survival Skills of Native California, Paul D. Campbell, Gibbs Smith, 1999, ISBN# 0-87905-921-4 and while the title suggests these are California specific, a lot of the skills apply anywhere. This is also an excellent book. I have more, but I'll let others take a shot.

My favourite skills book was Primitive Living and Survival skills by John and Geri Mcpherson. There was a thread I started a little while ago, i'll dig it up and bump it for you, lots of good suggestions.

I would recommend almost any book by Robert Ruark. He used to write a column called "The Old Man And The Boy" for Field & Stream magazine, back in the 50's.

And then there is the poet Robert Service, a Scotsman who became a Canadian; he is like the Rudyard Kipling of North America, wrote "The Cremation of Dan MacGrew" , "The Bear Who Walked Like A Man" and other great stuff about life in Alaska and the Yukon.

There is a series called "Adrenaline" from Amazon, an annual series about true life adventure/survival stories.

There are strange things done in the midnight sun by the men who moil for gold the Arctic trails have thier secret tales that would make your blood run cold; The Northern Lights have seen queer sights but the queerest they ever did see was that night on the marge of Lake Labarge I cremated Sam McGee....:D

I remember reciting that one in 7th Grade English. Only reason I remember it is that my teacher was so impressed that a slacker like myself chose that poem.:D

Thanks for all the suggestions thus far!
