Gents, I'm looking for a book that covers survival techniques. Ideally it would talk about both urban and wilderness survival, and if possible, cover basic stuff and more advanced aspects on the subject. I would also prefer if it was small enough to carry in a pack, so that whomever uses the bag has a handy "manual" at their disposal.

If there isn't anything that covers it all or if I should get two (or more) books - one to carry around and another as a go-to reference book, that will be appreciated too. Thanks in advance!

Try the SAS Survival Guide, by John Wiseman. It's one of the "go to" books on survival and this thing covers just about everything you could imagine. It's only 4.75" x 3.25" and is .75" thick. I carry one in my BOB and is well worth the few bucks it costs. The total amount of pages is 384 and it has plenty of pictures. The print is small in order to fit the full size book into the smaller version, but not to small to read.

The book by George Jasper of the Untied States Rescue and Special Operations Group
Called 6 ways in and 12 ways out. I really like that book.
Just do a google search for the US RSOG and you will find it.

That's my recommendation as well. This is a great book that covers a lot and even gets more technical with excellent insight.

Hey Bryan, you might remember I emailed them. I got this: " Thank you for contacting USRSOG. An administrator will contact you soon." and that's the last I heard. That was Christmas Day.

I don't know anything about this company but they're selling "6 Ways In, 12 Ways Out" also:

I personally am just going to send a $15 MO to the USRSOG and hope for the best. I heard somewhere on another site that they will stop printing this book, so thanks for the reminder that I need to get this one.

Thanks guys!
I just ordered from Amazon the "SAS Survival Guide", 2009 edition. I went to the US RSOG site but from what i understood they don't ship internationally (or at least there's absolutely no mention of the possibility).

Luv, If you wanted it just let me know and I will get one from George and send it to you if you pay for the cost of the shipping and book too ofcorse lol.
If you want to contact me by PM that is fine or at E-mail.
tacklebreeden@yahoo.com. I could find out all the info first and then let you know what it would cost you. anyways just let me know if you want to do that.

Also good score on the book your SAS book you ordered it is a very good one to. Add that with 6 ways in and 12 ways out and I think you will be set.
For survival books anyway.

Doc, sorry to hear that a admin. did not get back with you. If you still want one just let me know. I think they are like $12 and I will get one and send it to you also with that well you know;) lol.

just let me know Luv and Doc.

Im really interested in that 6 ways in, 12 ways out book.....Im definatly gettin one to add to the bookcase.

I also like the SAS book. Thats the first detailed survival manual I ever read. You got a good start in that one. Also check out the SAS Tracking and Land Nav book, Bushcraft, and 98.6 degrees by Cody Lundin. 98.6 is my favorite to read because its great info, and its presented in an easy to read way, unlike some others that feel like a textbook. Its good to get a few differant sources to compare tech from. Ive learned alot doing that.

Hi all,

Doc and Luv, You are both welcome and I got your emails to me and I sent replies back to you both.

SAS Survival Guide is published by Collins Gems. Check them out, as they sell several other related books. All of them are the same small size. Hillwalker's Survival Guide is OK. I would pass on the Knots book. Also check out some of the military books. They are not as small as the Collins Gem, but there are several that are good - Rangers Handbook, E&E, Survival guide are a couple I can think of off the top of my head.

Deep Survival is the book which has had most effect on my thinking, planning and gear, regarding survival. This, and Cody Lundin's 98.6 Degrees, are my two absolute top choices.

I went to Barns and Noble today looking for the SAS Survival Guide. Their computer showed that they had four of them, but the clerks could not find a single one. Someone’s hiding them from me!!!

The book is so good, each copy has SERE training.
You're going to have to look really hard to find it.

I am interested in that 6 ways in, 12 ways out book. I almost got it once now I think I will. I like Tom brown and Cody Lundin's books. A lot of books seam to just reprint the old Army manual. Tom and Cody have their own style.

J. Wayne Fears Complete Book of Survival. It is old school but one of the best out there.
