I just received a copy of 2004 Sporting Knives. It was on sale at Barnes and Noble for $2 but it took them a couple of months to find a copy for me.

The interest, the front cover subject is various 2004-model Schrade knives, and Schrades appear in various articles throughout the book. I haven't read it through yet, but the book is obviously modeled after the annual Knives publication.

Bob,
This series replaced the old Gun Digest's Book of Folding Knives that was published every few years, starting in the early 70's.
The original Gun Digest books usually had good, lengthy in-depth articles on the various manufacturer's.
In fact,I sent Codger his first picture of Henry Baer, holding a Sharpfinger, from one of the early issues. At least,Michael said that was the first picture he had ever seen.I think I still have his e-mail in the old mail file,in case he disputes this.;)
The new series didn't sell very well.I think because it mainly gathered manufacturer's advertising literature.
I had the first 2 issues (2002 and 2003) listed on ebay pretty cheap and they didn't draw a bid.
I guess they changed format because there were only a couple US manufacturers left.
If they leave out the custom makers, they might as well publish future copies in Chinese.

Thanks for the background on the book's publishing. I don't normally follow those things and rarely buy knife books/digests unless they're on super-closeout.

The price by the UPC says $22.99; the Barns and Noble sticker says $4.98, and I bought it for $2.00 with free shipping. I haven't read through the whole thing yet, but I'd say it's worth at least $3.00. There are no color photos (except the cover), and pages #162 - #254 are advertisements and directories.
