Aloha! Just returned from a trip to Hawai'i to do the cemetery thing for my old crew chief and best friend from the Vietnam War. He was from Kailua-Kona on the Big Island. It was a good trip, but glad it's over and we're back home. Before heading back home, a traditional marlin bladed Pahoa from his family was given to me. The blade is a marlin fish "sword", bill, or whatever it is called and the handle is of Koa wood that has been spear butted. Raw hide is the binder. It's somewhere around 20 inches long and this thing could do you some hurt!

wow bookie, just wow-- that is a great piece you have there, and it is weighted with history. glad you gave the old man a good send off.

Wow! Thats a fine dagger! I know about them bills. I had a few from sailfish but the whole fish was attached and on the wall:D Those barbs are one way. You get stuck with one of them and it aint coming out near as easy as it went in. That wood is awesome. What an honor! Glad your back now we miss your company!

Philllll, Sharp it's not, but rigid like iron. Obviously it's a belly weapon and like Kamidog said, once in, it ain't coming out easy. It would stop the bad guy in his tracks long enough that your shark toothed club could utterly ruin his day. The blades were sometimes sharpened though, and the much larger swordfish "swords" usually are sharpened & polished quite smooth and shiny.....and the wife DID NOT allow me to get the family's massive Hawai'ian tattoo on my shoulder/chest and upper arm to go along with it! They said it would only take 4 days to have it applied, too. Bummer.

Awesome dagger. You should've gotten the tattoo, it would have looked great on cutie curls.

Awesome piece and full of memory and history. That is sure to be one that will be "held and thought on" many a time.

Brother that is a wonderful gesture by the family, and im very sorry for your loss of your friend. That is truly an amazing piece of island history, and I hope it reminds you of the friendship and memories of your friend. Enjoy it and glad to have ya home.

First I would like to offer my condolences for your crew chief. Thank you both for your service. Now onto the knife. WOW!!! That's an heirloom piece Bookie, it's definitely has character. I see more and more of that Koa wood being used on 1911 grips. It has wonderful tiger striping. I would set a special place aside for that piece. Thanks for sharing everything with us. We really do feel like a close bunch of sharks and it warms my heart.
