This thread is in response to the "Favorite Knife Defense Techniques"
To: Donna Barnas, That thread was a great idea.
To go back to the bokken stuff. A friend I used to train kendo with took out a drug dealing knife wealder with his bokken. To make a long story short the BG was dealing at the playground/park across from my friend's apartment complex. His youngest sister (about 5yrs old) loved to play there and mentioned to him that there were some not too nice fellows selling stuff and harassing her. (The dealer was 17 and my friend was 16 at the time.) So one Saturday morning he goes with his sister to the playground area inconspicuously toting his bokken as a walking stick. BG shows up tells my friend and his sister to leave. Friend says no it is a public park BG pulls switchblade or stiletto (friend not well versed in weapon ID) and POW! My friend blasted the BG in the knee. How went down and my friend and his sister decided it was time to get the hell out of dodge!
On a side note. If you have not read Musashi's "A Book of Five Rings", I highly recommend this copy
A Book of Five Rings
(A Guide to Strategy) Miyamoto Musashi,
Translated by Victor Harris, 1974c., By Overlook Press
available from most used book stores on the internet. Other translations just do not sit the same in my mind as this copy. I find it useful in trying to apply some of the principals of it in my personal training in Eskrima.
I would love to hear of any books that other people on this forum feel help them with their training!
