what is the best book for how to make folders? how about "How to Make Folding Knives/a Step-By-Step How-To" by Ron Lake, Frank Centofante, Wayne Clay

That's a very good one. I can also recommend Terzuola's "The Tactical Folding Knife."

Things to think about, Kenny:

Are you a "true" newbie? I mean, have you made any knives before? If so, then folders aren't what you want to get into right off. I always advise learning the techniques of making and finishing fixed-blades for a while before lunging into folders. Ask anyone here. Folders are a whole new animal.

Try CUSTOM KNIFEMAKING by Tim McCreight, and STEP BY STEP KNIFEMAKING “New Edition” by David Boye. These two books are excellent, and will give you more than a few project knives to start with. Good luck!

I can also recommend Terzuola's "The Tactical Folding Knife."

Yes, that one is REALLY good. Even for those not wanting to get into folders, it just gives a lot of good information on making knives.

Again though, like higgy said, don't jump into folders if you are a complete newbie. (I haven't made any folders yet) :footinmou

Go to your local public library and see what they have. When I first got interested in making knives several years ago, I was living in a small city of only 100000 in New Zealand. One of the two library systems had Ed Fowler's "Knife Talk" and Bob Terzuola's "Tactical Folding Knife". Also talk to some local makers. Some of the ones who have been around a while may be willing to give/sell to you the books that they got started with.

One of my favorite books on knifemaking is very hard to find and I admit it doesn't talk about folders. However. The book is Knifecraft by Sid Latham, published in 1978. I found it in a library about 15 years ago, checked it out, and over the next few days photocopied the whole freakin thing, all 240 pages of it. It's a wealth of basic information showing folks like Lloyd Hale, Frank Centofante, Morseth, Bob Ogg and many many others doing their thing. I get that book out all the time, yellowed pages and all, for inspiration and just to get my feet on the ground again. You know how there was one special book that really hooked you? This would be my second most special book. It's been invaluable to me. If any of you can find it and have private access to a photocopier, I recommend taking advantage of it. Wonderful book.

Since I've been getting some "pressure" to start building a few folders (not really my interest as I haven't exhausted even a small part of the fixed blade ideas that batter me day and night), I've been giving it some consideration. So thanks for the thread, I'm taking notes too. :D

I just wanted to mention Latham's book as no one has mentioned it before that I know of.
