I have gotten into the habit of listening to books on tape while I am working in the shop. I find that I can get alot more work done because I don't get board and go find something else to do. It gives me something to occupy my mind while working with my hands. The problem is they are fairly expensive, especially if you get the unabridged versions which I like. I was wondering if any of the rest of you listen to books on tape while working? If so why don't we start a pass-around for books on tape so we each don't have to buy them all. Let me know if you are interested. Well what do you think.

Check your local public libraries. There is often a section with books on tape. Here in Houston, you can search their catalogue on the web then have a book, tape or video from any branch sent to a branch near you for pickup.

You could try :

www.audible.com

I used them for a year, good service. Just don't forget to get you books bought if you get a monthly membership. If you don't buy them, you lose them.

I listen to music when I'm in the shop. Classical when I'm hand-polishing, and heavy metal when I'm grinding. Old blues (the new stuff sux) in between the rest. I'll have to try books on tape, though... maybe I'll do a language tape.

I have gone to the library and listened to most of the books on tape at the library here. I have also rented books on tape from "Books on Tape", they have a huge selection. The problem is that alot of the books at the library are not really my type, and renting from bot while cheaper than buying is still expensive. I just thought that if some of you guys were doing the same thing we could swap some tapes. I think you guys probably listen to more of my "type" of stuff than the old lady that buys for the library. :D I also listen to alot of music, especially when out of books to listen to!

Give Half Price Books, or similar used/discount bookstores a try.
