Boomerangs Anyone?

'Rangs are cool, but best played with in a wide, wide open field if using traditional hand made wooden ones. They don't really do well when contacting hard concrete.

Trust me.

when i was little i seen my brother throw one after warning the neighbor kid to get back and stand by this tree for cover. he didnt listen and still to this day you can see the scar on his head. they are fun to fly if you have a large area and are quick at the duck and run manuver. it isnt that hard to learn how to throw one. get a cheap plastic one first to practice with before switching to a wooden one.

They are fun, Ive tried(and lost:( ) a few.

I think the correct technique for throwing is to hold the bommerang perpindicular to the ground, and throw it with a snap of the wrist.

What do you call a boomerang that won't come back?
A stick.

My Boomerang Wont Come Back

Welcome to the Boomerang Association of Australia, a non-profit club formed in 1969 in Melbourne, and now with members from all around Australia, and indeed internationally. We run tournaments, publish magazines, and in general promote the sport and history of boomerangs!

Right here our goal is to teach you how to throw a boomerang, where to buy a boomerang, list the latest boomerang competitions and demonstrations, and explain the materials and construction of boomerangs. Plus we'll show how boomerang throwing is a sport, and, if you're not having any luck, why your boomerang won’t come back! At worst, you can still admire the boomerang plans and photos in our galleries…

And, of course, we’ll explain why a hunting or throwing stick is not the same as a (returning) boomerang!

Wasn't there some weird little aboriginal looking feral kid with a sharpened steel boomerang in one of those crazy Mad Max movies? THWAK! It chopped some fool's fingers off when he tried to catch it. :D

Boomerangs are great fun, good exercise, and guaranteed to give the family dog a conniption fit when his "stick" flies around in a wide circle when you throw it.
I recommend a light plastic "admiral's hat" design boomerang with to start with, they are easier to throw and less likely to cause any injury or damage.
Esav's link (#5 above) has a lot of good information.

I made a pair of them in middle school shop class by laminating walnut shingles together & grinding down the edges, they ended up slowly warping but still flew in a U shaped trajectory. 25 years later I still have them packed away somewhere. I've had plastic ones too but they just weren't as much fun to me. You really do need a large open space & the fewer people about the better, bomerangs seem attracted to bystanders...

Cobber = a mate, friend.
Australian slang that like many things is dying nowadays.

A few years back I actually found a book titled, "How to speak Australian," or something to that effect. One phrase had me in stitches, about "pervin' at the shiela's norks..." :D

Probably best left untranslated, especially since this is Gadgets and Gear.

Who knows a bit about boomerangs? They look like a fun toy. Fill me in.

I have made somes and throw a lot. Boomerang hobby is like knife hobby, all a world, what to say to introduce it to you? Feel free to ask, i will try to answer as far as english technical vocabulary will let me do.

dantzk.

Wood or "plastic?" From the little I've found, it appears that wood tends to warp, and that even the slightest warp will change the flight. How much of a problem is this?

I used to throw some but it has been awhile. The part about the big open area with no people around is important. You need a good place if you want get into it. It takes practice, make no mistake. Just remember WELSH on each throw. Wind, elevation, layover, spin, hardness. Good luck and many happy returns. :D

I had a plastic one when I was a kid.

Maybe it was just cheap junk, but I could never get it to come back.

Rugger's the kind of guy who not only likes to throw boomerangs, he doesn't worry if the field is crowded. :D

we throw these things around our place we loose them then after the leaves fall and the snow melts we find them again in the spring.
a real bummer if you loose it on the first throw.
