Boony hats

I've got a family history of skin cancer and don't want to mess around with sun exposure. My dermatologist tells me that the baseball-style caps I've been wearing just don't cut it anymore. Can anyone recommend a good, tough booney hat? I'm in a hot-weather climate, so the biggest concerns are SPF protection, light-weight fabric, and durability. And, since I'm a cheap a$$, price. ;-) Any thoughts?

I'v got fair skin on both sides, and can practically burn under office lights! I have been using a standard military boonie hat for years. Works great and costs about $10. Many colors and camo patterns to choose from too.

Australia does some cracking hats for the sun - Akubras being the most famous (per croc dundee) try www.hatsdirect.com.
I've got an akubra and a soft hat by www.rohan.co.uk

Tilley hats are expensive but are well worth the cash. I sent some in with our teams working in Antarctica,(UV is extreme due to Ozone depletion) they reckoned these hats were one of the best bit's of kit that they had been issued with .
I have also used one of these hats myself for many years and can recommend them .there are a few styles available , I go with the T3.

Those Tilley hats must be made of kevlar or something like that. One hat was eaten by an elephant and cycled through its digestive system three different times! The owner was offered a replacement hat but he said no and still uses the one eaten by the elephant.

They have a web site also, but I do not have it at hand.

I have had a Tilley for years. Works in rain or sun equally well. I had mine in the rain in Scotland and the sun in the Arizona desert. It rules. Ironclad guarantee too.

No: Better. Kevlar is strong, but not very wear resistant and doesn't like to be folded.

I've got a couple of T3s. Why more than one? Sweat stains.

Wish someone around here sold T2s, as that's something which looks useful.

Used to wear the Tilleys at home, but now it's mostly when I go to warmer places. Or cold or rainy, for that matter, like Svalbard (a few photos of me with the hat) for example.

Nowadays at home, it's usually Australian felt hats, Akubra and mostly Mad Hatters.

Went through 3 Filsons.[wore through the sweat bands]They also gave me a rash on several occasions. I believe it was from the oiled canvas touching skin but that's only a guess. I've gone through several boonie hats, just flat fell apart after a while but very cheap. For about the last 10 years I've been a total Tilley fan. Green T3 for field, timber and rivers and a T5 in khaki with olive underbrim for street and desert. When they get really trashie looking I put them on the top rack of the dishwasher and they come out looking new. I really can't say enough good about Tilley. Their service is great also. It is truely a no BS, no question warranty [needed on another product, not hats.] I haven't looked for a different field hat for years. In the long run that fact has made their hats very inexpensive. AND you absolutely can't make them shrink. Follow their size and wearing instructions and you will be very happy.

I was just thinking about this topic as well with the summer season closing and I was wondering what things have you used your hat for other than a regular hat?

Anybody own both a Tilly and an Ultimate Hat?
They look very similar. Even the descriptions are identical.
Thanks,

REI also has a hat that is very similar to the Tilly called the Explorer for $30. Can anyone compare the Tilley, the Ultimate hat and the REI Explorer?
