boot fitting-please help

I just bought two sets of Wellco all leather boots with panama sole-features I've been looking for for quite a while.
I'm surprised how thin the soles are- no midsole at all. Is this how combat boots are?
I thought they were supposed to be "heavy duty".
Anyway- they fit well except across the ball- will they stretch much there?

Are there any other all leather boots with NO lining and decent lug sole?- I hate mud in my lugs.

It sounds like you got a decent pair of light work boots, but probably not enough support for lots of standing or walking. I have seen lots of pictures of special forces soldiers wearing commercial-type hiking or police swat team boots. I have the feeling the standard issue models are replaced when possible.

On the UK issue Assault Boots, there is no midsole or lining. You are issued with seperate footpads - seems to work and allows for fine tuning of volume.
