Hello

I am looking for recommendations on quality boot knifes, to be used by police officer, as a "last chance" weapon. Boots will be tactical SWAT style boots.

The Gerber Guardian Back Up comes to mind, I am looking at that one

thanks!

Spend more money and get a Fällkniven G1 Garm Fighter with a custom Tek-Lok sheath.

I work Fire&Rescue and therefore do not have personal experiance to share with boot knives...but I buy a lot of my equipment through Galls...a catalog supplier for Public Safety equipment. www.galls.com....1-800-477-7766.
They list your Gerber Guardian 7" at $59.99...and it appears to have a dbl. serrated edge. They also show 2 models of Smith&Wesson both with dbl. smooth edges. One is a counter-part to the Guardian and sells for $19.99...yet is only 1 oz. vs. Guardians 3 oz. wt. The other S&W listed is a 9" version..yet still only 3 oz. wt. and sells for $22.99.
All come with leather sheaths.

I don't know if it is the same as the one that Galls sells, but it looks like a good choice for an inexpensive boot knife.

It comes rather dull and the steel is very soft, the latter doesn't matter much in a last ditch weapon though.
You need to get a custom sheath for it. The Guardian Back-Up rattles around in that bulky plastic sheath like there's no tomorrow. And that adjustment thingie sounds nice in theory, but it's not as useful as one might think - and the mechanism is pretty flimsy.

Are you completly settled on boot/ankle carry? I've found it to be pretty impractical when it comes to accessability. I find that a smaller fixed blade that "blends" in with the gear on your duty belt works best (like the Ka-bar TDI) works well. Neck knives also arent a terrible option if you can keep them stationary. I usually tuck the ball-chain under the velcro on my vest. The Emerson La-Griffe is great for this. Frontsight's Hideaway knife also has an excellent rep though I haven't had the pleasure as yet.

my primary position of "response" would be from a seated position (car, office, etc) or from a ground scuffle type position

also, if I tripped or fell, I would not want to stab myself to death (neck carry)

also, I dont want to spend 10 million dollars on a knife, something of decent quality, which will only see (hopefully at the max) one or two real uses in its lifetime, and be in the holster the remainder of the time

Randall makes one. I believe a gerber and sog pentagon are pattered after the randall.

I would suggest the Ka-bar TDI Law Enforcement Knife. It has a nice grip and holster and was designed by a man that knows his stuff, John Benner.

Hiya, here are a few suggestions...

For starters I carry a Hide Away Knife on the strap of my vest

which makes it accessible if I am unable to reach my boot. With that said, I am confident that you could incorporate a HAK to fit your purpose.

My next HAK is going to be the Magnum for lower body carry...

Last of all you may want to loot at the push dagger design, at the present time there are two that I can think of,

Ifthe person your getting the knife for is not yourself, then just give em money and let them get what they feel comfortable. Anyway good luck.
