I've heard many ask about what knife to bring to "boot camp" at USMC. They are commonly answered that this is not allowed. Mind telling me why? I mean, aren't they issued M9's or so, what harm would it do carry a personal knife?

You aren't issued M-9s in boot camp. You get a special time to train with them, but it is regulated like everything else. You barely have an personal belongings in boot camp, it's all part of the training.

For one thing, you have no need for a personal knife in Boot. During boot camp, emotions run high and stress levels are extremely high -- a knife is not something that needs to be in the hands of someone that isn't cutting it. They could hurt someone, or hurt themselves.

I was almost certain that was the reason. I assume the rule came into practise after some type of accident?

Thanks for the answer.

One of the premises of boot camp or basic training is to provide the team-training concept. Individuality is not promoted.

G.I. means Government Issue.

The government likes conformity. Hence no individual no nada

When you've completed "boot camp" and go on to your permanent
duty station, you can get all the personal carry knives
you want at the PX ( post exchange ). I myself carried
a Gerber Command II waaaayyy back there in '83':D

AET :D

You're not allowed to "play" with sharp things in basic training until they allow you to. The reason for this is due to an individuals stress factor. in other words, they want to make sure that you won't hurt anyone else or yourself.

G.I. stands for General Infantry.
