Hey, I was asked by a special forces guy to make him a boot knife and he wants tthe blade to be dark. First of all I don't know what curtain design would work the best and how teflon black spray would work for this? He doesn't mind if it is my first one of these, just as long as i don't mind if he has to use it on somebody someday on a mission. Thanks. Tom

Welcome to Bladeforums! Don't mind Sure-Fire; he seems to be a little confused. I'll move this thread to Shop Talk for you; that's where the knifemakers hang out.

There are a bunch of dark blade treatments and coatings.Run a search on the old threads.Check out Brownell's website for several choices. To do it simply make the knife and blue the blade with cold bluing.

I rust browned a an O1 blade once and it had a nice look. Don't know how durable it was as a finish, but I'm guessing that since O1 gets a patina on it pretty easily anyway that it works out ok for a user.

Hi Tom glad to see you finally made it to BFC shop talk
I see Cougar found you and got you to the right place:)
in our e-mails I'd asked if it were Hi carbon steel or SS
and I'm now not sure if I got back to you..thinking now you were going with 1095 on both the boot knife and the throwers, if you go with the 1095
Gun Bluing , or hot bluing will work for you, or a gun coat (TM)
this is what I used on the ReCon XL1 you saw..
browning the blade ( a controlled rusting) is a way also as mentioned.
you may want to look into etching it for a dark look,it's used in Damascus to darkening the high carbon steel all the time,
ferric chloride would be one to use.it's an etchent used for circuit boards you can get it at some of the radio shacks.
hope this helps..

and wellcome to the BFC play ground :D
