Boot knife

I would say the 3.

Thinner profile, shorter and more compact sheath with a boot clip.

Also lighter.

The RC-3 has a thinner blade and is shorter, so IMO it would be a little better for a boot knife. I do not carry boot knives so I can't say for sure.

That is a tough call. I like both and there is not a lot of difference. I guess if I had to choose only one then I would go with the RC-4.

Why a boot knife? Is it going to be a defensive weapon? Worn inside the boot or outside?

There must be a better choice for a boot knife than these two. If those are the only choices, the RC-3 would be the more comfortable of the two; but I'd look at other options. If it were me, I'd talk to one of the custom makers and specify exactly what it is you want.

Truthfully, I haven't tried a boot knife that was comfortable to wear. I had a leg carrier for a jump knife once, but even that was a pain in the ass. And I used a dive knife worn on my leg that was OK. Otherwise, the boot knife concept got by me.

As Rotte stated, "there must be a better choice."
I was just carrying the RC-3 in my boot a bit ago, and i felt by using the clip it rode to high and by letting it free float; imo, it's unfixed status and position within my boot is untrustworthy.
(i'm talking about just a pair of old high top cowboy shit kickers i dug out of a trashcan)

A friend of mine punched holes in his cowboy boot and attached the RC4 sheath to the inside using the screws that came for the MOLLE back.

He loves it.

I just carry mine on my belt...

A boot knife in a defensive role is kind of useless imo. I'm more looking for a blade i could access easily while sitting on a bike. Top of the boot seems a good location. The sheath options of the rats made them seem something to look at for that purpose.

Hear ya there. I ride as well. I carry a necker and a folder on my belt. I've asked one of the forum makers to make a horizontal carry knife/sheath for the same purpose.

The problem with a boot knife is that you are likely to wear your pants over your boots--it'll be tough to get to it with one hand.

If the knife is worn outside the boot and you go down, you could end up losing the knife. (I'm sure that would be your last worry, but still....)

Pants over boots for sure. haha--- Which is why I think I'd want it hooked to the outside, handle down, so I could just reach into the pant leg. Tripton's friend using the screws seems like it would be a good idea. As far as "better options", blades designed as boot knives seem to have a defensive role in mind. I want a worker I can get to other than my necker and pocket knife and I don't like carrying knives on my belt.

I get what you are after, maybe a below the knee set of straps would work well.
I would go to the store and pick up some velcro-straps, one for the top of the sheath and one for the bottom. and then right below the knee on the out side of your leathers you could wear your knife.
That sounds like a pretty cool option.

That makes a S&W model 29 .44mag in an ankle holster sound like a good idea. Just kidding ya. To each his own. I know that as I approach 50yrs old I am not a flexible as I was was. I just don't see that as really accessible unless you are sitting cross legged.

I have had little success carrying a small handgun in an ankle holster for the same reasons that the ankle carry of a knife seems challenging to me. The problems that I have are in the ares of accessibility, comfort, securing if when I run, concealment.

I do wish you the best of luck. I hope that it works for you or that you find a carry method that suits your needs.
