i know this probably doesnt belong here, so i guess move it if need be, but i was wondering if anyone could help who's had years of experience.

i just got a new pair of boots, ordered 'em off cabelas, and they feel alright, but i can shake the feeling that i need a smaller size. when walking around my house, they feel alright, but i cant help but notice some play in the heel area. is this normal? or should my entire foot be secure from heel to toe? i cant decide if i should returnr them for a smaller size or not, and if so, just a half size or full?. any advice would be great. thanks in advance

Are your wearing them with the same thick socks or two layers of socks you will be hiking with?

Are they laced up tight and your foot is still moving?

Did you try them on in the morning, because feet tend to swell as the day goes on? The end of the day is the best time to try them on.

Some movement is ok but obvious slipping off of the heel is very bad. If your heel feels like it is sliding up that is not good.

The length of a boot should have some impact on the fit at the heel, but the width of the boot is more important. You might need a narrower boot or a different style boot with a narrower heel.

Just my humble opinion. (I am an avid hiker and outdoorsman and work as a podiatrist to fund my hobbies;) )

I use Cabela's boots, they usually tell you if they are larger or smaller than normal. Re-check there site or call and ask. They may be marked wrong if they are that much to big. You won't have any problems with Cabela's if they need returning. I would follow HF's advice first before making a decision. Good luck.

Boots are one of those things that I REALLY prefer to by at a brick and mortar store. Sore feet, bruised, blistered, and mangled from poor fitting boots can make any trip a nightmare. Go to a store that specializes in outdoor footwear and be professionally fitted for boots. Your feet will thank you, even if your wallet does not.

If they are still big with thick socks on, another option is an insole. Makes them more comfy too. I have some in my Danners that make them feel like tennis shoes, I can wear them all day long.

I've found Cabela's boots to run skinny and long. Typically I need a 14D or 15 regular, but with cabelas I can comfortably wear a 13D all day long. Except my newest pair, the Woodsman steel toes. Great boots, fit good and very comfortable, but the soles are just so narrow its rediculous. 13D and anything bigger or wider would be loose, but my feet definately hang off the inside of the sole; very odd.

All in all, I like Cabela's boots, though I've had longevity issues in extreme environments. I'd like to try a pair of Danner Quarry's next, though. Have heard a lot of good things about them.
