Im interested in making a boot/ throwing knife with about a 5 inch blade. I do not know anything on making throwing knives and would appreciate any help.

For a throwing knife, you have to consider that the piece may get lost, broken, or damaged. Keeping that in mind, I rek'mnd a piece that is relatively inexpensive, yet tough, and easy to acquire. For after practicing for months throwing the knife profeciently, you want that hard work to carry over the next piece if possible.

I highly rek'mnd a Livesay Uji Fighter. This knife is inexpensive-NOT CHEAP-and tough as nails. I have misthrown this knife to the point where it made sparks, and yielded only MINOR tip damage.

This knife conceals well, has an awesome grip configuration, as do most of Newt's knives, and the curve in the blade offers a mean cut when slashed thru material. Balance for throwing is if-y at best, but with practice, I was able to stick it 80% of the time. As far as accurate...that depends on you.

The knife is $50, VERY replacable, and the sheath alone is worth that much to me. Give it a try, and yo WON't be dissappouitned.

There is a knife thrower's forum at Blade Forums that would be your best source of information. In general you need to make the knife out of a tough alloy that is not heat treated too hard. I would suggest 5160 spring alloy hardened down in the low 50's.

If the blade is symmetrical it will rotate more stabily as your distance gets long (for one or two turns it won't matter much). You need a relatively broad tip to keep it from breaking. You want your handle to be relatively free of bumps if you throw from the handle. You need one side of your blade to be dull (except right at the point) if you throw from the blade.

Look at this knife design in the link below from Camillus. If you don't sharpen the false edge for more than an inch this shape would work well. The ATS-34 alloy and the heat treatment of the Camillus design would be too brittle to use for much throwing.

Hmmm. Some knifesupply houses have boot knife kits...blades with no handles attached. Think the blades are usually around 3.5 to 4", but they are cheap!
