boots for hiking

I have a pair of Bates Marine Desert Boots that I use for hiking. I have better insoles than the stock ones but I think they are good hiking boots.

They make pretty good boots, and tend to make a decent alternative. In my experience however, a good pair of hiking boots will still be the best option

Meindels from Cabela's.. Worth every cent.. I have a few pair, and have worn them on 8 trips to Alaska.. sheep, moose, Brown bear, goat.. I swear they saved my hunt, if not my life a few times..My guide turned me on to them. He gets 2 seasons out of a pair, which is equiavalent to 15 years of hunting for the average person.

+1 on Meindl's. I've been using them for 15 years, and keep buying them.

My Fall hunting boots are the Meindl Winter model. Warm but not as bulky as some of the Frankenstein size boots out there. They offer very good protection and ankle support when scrambling over icy rock, etc. Also fine for snowshoeing.

For regular hiking, I have done well with Asolos from www.sierratradingpost.com.

Of course, it all depends upon what fits your feet best. That's the first question.

If you are carring a heavy back pack you should get a boot that will give extra support to your foot and ankle. I have a pair of Scarpa treks in all leather and they are pretty stiff to walk in without any extra backpack weight but they are the best heavy duty hiker for backpacking I have used bar none. They are not a cheap boot though. For day hikong or to wear at the range I have a couple different pairs of Merrels and NB 976 country walkers

For a light walker, I must agree with the New Balances---especially if you need an extra wide pair as I do.

But a lot depends upon fit. I'd rather have some merely average boots that fit than some Meindls that did not.

Would hiking boots work for running in the woods (wintertime) or, is something lighter a better choice?

Military guys run in them all the time so I'm sure they would work. Personally, I'd probably go with something a bit lighter but that's just individual preference.
