what hiking boots do you guys wear. i know its a very personal thing. but i just want to know of any flaws in workmanship/materials the various companies have.

bad and good eperiences

thx

I actually have two pairs of good boots, lighter ones and a pair of really heavy leather. The first ones are made in Germany by MEINDL, I use them for lighter tours and not so difficult terrain, for heavy use i have French made "Le Chameau", they are as strong as you can imagine but very very expensive, but until now they're worth every penny!;)

Asolo afx 520 gtx.

Magnificant. The all leather outer with Gore-Tex upper is so easy to care for. The Vibram soles are wonderful. The padding is great, it keeps my foot secure, comfortable, and warm wether on the trail or ice fihhing in -15 degree weather.

gortex "Montrails" $150. terrible less than one year and gave away

leather gortex "H Brown" (look like matterhorns) $225. 10 years still going strong resoled once

leather nylon "Hi-teks" midnight runners 6 years and still going used the most

Lowa's are pretty popular but the threads came undone.

I have Zamberlan Pro Treks.

These are heavy leather boots. AWESOME. They take a while to break in though, being so heavy. I want a lighter boot as well. I'm not sure what is good though. US issue jungle boots are pretty comfy and light.

Has to be La Sportiva....I have the Makalus and use them for ice climbing, mountaineering, hiking and scrambling. No complaints so far, but it took me a couple of tries to get the waterproofing right....

I have on apair of Asolos right now and they are great. I also own a pair of Merrills that I wear hiking. God love boots:D

Asolos are great boots. I can often get away with a size smaller just because they fit my foot so well. This summer I wore Redwings working on a wildland fire crew. I really liked them a lot too.

Merrells,

yeah aster alot of research. ive decided the asolos are probably the boots for me.

does the 520 gtx have a FULL gusseted tongue. ie does it go all the way up

Two pairs, RedWing engineers for urban, and Wolverines for rough terraign. Both encase my feet in steel, the wolvies add goretex, AND thinsulate for thermal assistance.
I've also got some slippers for the house.

I've been using Lundhags since the early 1980's.

At the moment I've got four Scandinavia which I use in rotation, one Trekker and one model which doesn't have a modern counterpart.

And that's about it: They're so good I don't need much else. I use them from Svalbard, Morocco to the Salomon Islands (also Grand Canyon, but no photos on the web from that trip) and at home, year round.

It's good, but do you know there's an A2 on its way? (No English text as yet, but I think you'll understand most of it, but I'll point out it's 420J2-VG10-420J2 laminated steel.

Griffon, you seem to be very knowlegdable about boots, what do you think of Norwegian or Swedish army boots? I know many people think the Swedish army boots are the best of the two. Anyway they are sort of nice if you are on a budget, because they can also be used for skiing.

Btv. I`ve seen some ads for Timberland boots, what do people think of them?

What was so bad about the Montrails? They came pretty highly recommended... Or so I have heard.

I'm in the market for some new boots as well and I'd like to make an educated purchase.

I have boots made to fit by Russell Moccasin Co. You send in your measurements and they send boots back in a couple months. I have a lightweight pair called PH-II's, fit like a second skin, and a 600 gram insualted boot for cold weather. You can select options for both, type of leather, soles, heel counters (I highly reccommend these), insulation. They are flat out the best fitting footwear I have ever had period. Oh yeah, with these you can leave the moleskin at home too. They make shoes from slippers to hard core work boots.
The PH-II's were about $200, the cold weather boots with extra options were about $250. Darn cheap for custom fit. I have worn out two pairs of casual shoes, I have two pair of PH-II's, and one Cold Weather boot. I have had Asolo, Civetta, Danner, Hitek, & Red Wings, & Schnees pack boots, these are better. I have worked in construction for 15 years, been hunting & backpacking for more, I have a little experience with boots.

Good Luck,
Tom

COuld you drop me an e-mail with contact information for those PH-II's you are talking about please. Also what type of leather treatment do you use for outdoor, I have been using MT Pitchblend with good success, but always looking for more stuff LOL
