Does anyone know whether or not using borax as a steel coating will cause corrosion to electric heating elements in a heat treating oven? I picked some borax up today and the box explains that it contains sodium tetraborate decahydrate. I am no ones chemist but have been warned not to use salt in an electric oven.

Thanks. RL

I suspect you should use caution, the stuff will eat the brick out of a forge. What you could do, is place a few fire bricks in the oven, then place the object containing borax on the bricks... the bricks would serve to protect the lining of the furnace.

I'm curious as to what you're doing....

Thanks and you deserve an answer. I was toying around with protecting stainless from decarb during HT. I have about thrown in the towel on using borax for that. I tried it briefly and am not sold on its use for what I was hoping for.
