The deer weren't moving until late last night due to a hard south wind. So the cell phone camera came out and I snapped some pics of knives 20ft up in a tree.

Bark River Huntsman. Little knife with Napoleon syndrome. This is all the knife I need when gutting a deer.

Another shot of it.

I also carry my SAK harvester in a Redbeardo sheath on my hip and have found the saw to be invaluable when clearing small branches.

Not the deer I was looking for:

Tree ninja shot.

Great pictures!

I just received a Bark River Liton Bror with Cocobolo handles through a trade. They are convex ground and razor sharp. I will have to take some pics when I get a chance, but this knife is the best fixed blade I have ever held.

It will be with me when I go Whitetail hunting too. :)

Those moments out there in the silence and solitude of nature are some of the best in all of life.

Thx for sharing.

Those Liten Bror's have been near the top of my list for awhile now! I had an Aurora but sold it because it was too much knife for my liking, but the Liten Bror is the Aurora's little cousin and seems to be about the perfect size.

Good luck hunting. I was in the stand Saturday and Sunday night and saw 4 monster bucks and several other medium sized ones. They are glued to the doe's right now and the rut is very close here in central/southern Iowa. Closest they ever got to me was 50 yards and I won't take a shot that long with my bow.

i tried to ignore but i cant...so you are hunting deers with bow and arrow sitting up a tree dressed like a ninja? is that allowed where you live? i once saw a video from a bear hunt with bow and arrow, the bear was hit two times, laying on the ground moaning and screaming, trying to reach the arrows and pull them out. he finally managed that and ripped his own guts out with the arrow and died after 10 minutes of immense suffering. with bullets they get a shock due to the huge impact and die much quicker with less suffering. bow and arrow is sadistic and thats the reason why it is forbidden in the most countries. (no argument that native americans did, they had no other choice and used guns when they were available). the only difference between us and animals is the size of the brain, they are living, feeling creatures like us and our brain gives us the chance to use weapons to limit suffering to a minimal amount.
just sad.

:thumbdn: Have you ever seen a car/deer accident where a person was injured? I have. It ain't pretty. I have shot 20+ deer with my bow and never had one suffer.

Sounds like they were a poor shot. It can happen with guns, too.

Interesting knife.

Over the past few months I've been becoming more and more convinced that hunting is the most ethical way to eat meat. I'm no stranger to shooting, but I've never been hunting before - what advice would you have on starting out?

Not quite sure how to address this one. First of all, it's 100% legal to bow hunt.

Secondly, if you think bullets kill quickly and painlessly you are a victim of Hollywood movies where even the smallest bullet wound kills the bad guy instantly. I can assure you as a hunter that uses both bow and guns that bullets do not always kill quickly and painlessly. The deer I have shot over the years with my bow have all expired very quickly and with much less "drama" because I pick my shots very carefully to insure the animal suffers as little as possible. Several of them have had a arrow pass clean through and they didn't even know they were hit. Similar to cutting yourself with a very sharp knife, the sharper it is, the less it hurts. They fell over after taking a few steps with zero panic. Now when a deer gets hit by a bullet that is designed to rip and tear the flesh instead of cut it I can assure you they know they have been hit and run in full panic mode to escape. Sometimes bullets kill quickly if they disrupt the central nervous system, sometimes they do not. Don't allow yourself to be fooled into thinking that somehow a bow and arrow is more cruel.

Hunting is a tradition, as well as a good way to obtain meat for the table. Meat that is truly the first organic meat. Meat that has had a chance to live free instead of being pinned up and pumped full of steroids only to be marched onto a truck and onto the killing floor of a packing plant. Killing isn't easy nor enjoyable and that is why the good hunters practice their crafts and only take ethical shots. The hunting experience is why we do it, not the kill.

Oh man, that is a tough one to answer over a forum. The best advice I can offer is find someone that has been hunting for a long time and is willing to share their knowledge and ask them lots of questions. They used to be everywhere, now they are getting a little tougher to come by. Join some hunting forums and do some lurking and ask questions. You've got plenty of good hunting over there in Illinois, I'm just across the river from you in Iowa. If we were closer I would offer to take you hunting sometime.

whats the point, killing everything thats possibly crossing our ways? we are not allone but act in that way, time to adjust a bit to the world surrounding us. :thumbdn:

@maverick: this was not an offense, your post reminded me of that video and the people hiding in the trees giggling while watching the bear suffering and dying. im not a hollywood victim but joined bullet hunts and watched movies of the different tacticts so i know a bit what im talking about. here bow and arrow is forbidden because of the above mentioned reasons, so i can just say what i saw in those clips. i too believe that hunting is the most ethical way to eat meat and if you made the decision towards bow and arrow because you have the experience that it is the better way to kill for the deer and you chose that way in respect for the animal its ok i guess. i just get very furious when people do that (hunting) for their own fun and dont mind the suffering of the animals or dont use the flesh afterwards but let it rot in the woods.

As with anything that may be controversial there is always the fringe idiots that give the rest a bad name because it's their stories and videos that spread like wildfire across the internet.

We have very strict laws in my state about wasting meat. If you shoot something you take it home and eat it, because if the Wildlife Officer catches you wasting meat you will be ticketed and can have your hunting privileges revoked.

I live in the Centre of Canadian Hunting and I can assure you that there are people who hunt with both guns and bows who shouldn't be allowed in the woods. I sat for two hours in a restaurant listening to some moron with a gun tell his friends how he hit one but couldn't find it after it ran. Instead of doing what a good hunter does and tracking the wounded Deer he sat eating his lunch while the Deer suffered. I reported the jerk to the ministry and he lost his gun his license and almost his truck.
Many people in this part of the world feed their families with wild game which beats the he## out of eating meat that is full of drugs and other garbage. Take a trip to an abatoir is you want to see disgusting suffering.

I hunt for meat and I eat everything I kill. I hunt legally and ethically, and if you don't respect that, I have nothing further to say to you.

Ok guys. This one has gone way outside what we would call a knife discussion. Closed it is.
