Bored so I anodized my Southard

I got really bored with this knife and felt the stock look was pretty unimaginative. I don't like the knife enough to put $50 custom scales on it at this point so i dyed the stock scales a dark midnight blue. The pics make it look black and it goes from black to a dark Navy blue depending on the light. I anodized the Ti to a nice blue color. I did spring for a Ti deep pocket carry I'm waiting on and I'll probably pick up some Ti standoffs, pivot screw and anodize those to finish it off. My other knives are stock and conservative so this one is now growing on me.

I'm sure it's been done before, this is nothing original, but like I said I'm bored so I'll post it here. I also removed the stainless piece that sits between the Ti pieces for the lanyard hole, it served no purpose and looked stupid on the knife.

The stock photo is not mine, I took it from the Internet for reference.

Awesome! I'm considering anodizing some of my folders and I'm glad to see how good your result is. Have you considered anodizing the blade, and is such a thing possible? Does it alter the steel? What about the clip? Did you sandblasted it?

For the clip I have a Ti deep pocket carry clip on the way so I just left it, if I do anything it would grind down the point on the Southard clip a bit.

I'm not sure what the process is for anodizing steel, it can be done but you wouldn't get the same results that Ti gets. I wouldn't be brave enough to try it. For the Ti I just used 9 volt batteries, no need to go out and buy a $150 power source. All I needed to buy was TSP for a couple bucks, some cheap 9 volts, and Ti wire off Amazon. All in it cost me less than $20.

To dye the scales I just diluted and boiled Rit dye and dropped them for 30 minutes. Once I get the standoffs and screws I'm going to dye them all bronze. It's definitely worth trying if you're bored with the knife anyway. It's a fun little project and gives an boring knife a new lease on life.

If you do do it, do it right, clean the parts with alcohol, use Ti wire to dip the parts etc...

That's GORGEOUS !
Well Done !

I wasn't going to look in, afraid it was going to be a clown knife. I'm glad I visited. Thanks for posting.
