I was talking with a friend today that does a lot of work with jewelry and we were discussing heat treating steel and such and I mentioned the crud that builds up on steel sometimes during the process. He mentioned a process that he uses to prevent this from happening on gold that he heats to as high as 1400 degrees. He takes a chunk of boric acid and puts it in alcohol and once it's dissolved he dips the gold in the solution and lets it air dry. That leaves a white powdery coating on the gold that prevents oxygen from coming in contact with the surface during the high temps. Has anyone ever heard of this, ever tried it? Sure would be nice to be able to use something that simple and come out with perfectly clean blades.
