Hey guys. I have an edge pro apex and I'm looking at some boride stones. I need half inch stones for harder steels, including a 120 grit but up to 1000, also, a 120 and 50 grit 1" stone for hogging off a ton of steel.

If boride isn't the way to go, what is?

Also, how much pressure and speed do I use on these stones? And how long will they last if I use the right pressure and speed? Someone told me they can't say for sure but probably 50 knives. But I want to know from someone with experience. Of course I'm going to find out myself but I don't want to buy them if they last 20 knives. Even 50 is iffy.

Any information on these would be great!

Thanks guys,

Bo

If you're looking for 1/2" stones for use in sharpening re-curves, the Boride CS-HD series would probably work since they're silicon carbide. If you're dealing with S110V or other vanadium-rich steels, these will do an OK job up until you reach a fairly high level of polishing. No idea on the longevity, as I do not own them and do not own recurve knives. I really doubt anyone is going to be able to say with any reasonable degree of certainty how long a given stone will last in terms of how many knives they will sharpen, so I'm not even going to try to answer that question. If there were an option for 1/2" diamond stones, I'd point you toward those over the Boride but I haven't seen any.

I'm not aware of a "true" 50 grit stone available for Edge Pro. There is the Atoma 140 for Edge Pro, which I know I've mentioned to you on a number of occasions. There is also a Venev Diamond stone which is rated at FEPA-F 60 grit. However, it does not cut nearly as quickly as the Atoma in my experience (and my Atoma is pretty well-worn). I own the Atoma 140, Venev 60, and Venev 80.

Go to Congress tools dot com. Thousands of good stones for kmg, edge pro, and Tsprof systems. Silicone carbide, aluminum oxide, Boride. Soft, super soft, hard, super hard, etc, etc. All SIZES and shapes.

If your looking for stones that cut hard steels check out the new edge pro diamond matrix stones that just came out this summer.

I've been liking what I've seen so far.

"Pssst, hey kid. Looking for some hones? I got Diamond Matrix. It's the only game in town."

It's a sickness, I tell ya. :p

Pshttt, I wish there was a sketchy dude selling EP stones on the corner. Would save me the trouble of getting them shipped! LOL

7F3AA54E-3E38-4622-AA84-EF5D0B6D8278.jpeg I have a few of these stones but I have only used them free hand and on steels like 1095, 4116, and aus8.
The 1200 gives a nice finish and it is pretty quick for a high grit stone.

I did use the 150 on s90v and it worked but it was slow.
On regular steels the 150 was pretty good.
The 600 seems nice too but I have used that the least so I don’t really have an opinion on it good or bad.

All the stones came pretty flat and they were a bit cheaper than regular EP stones so if you use your EP a lot these can be a good deal.
None of these stones are the same thickness though so you will definitely want to use the compensator with them.

These stones with boron, what per cent is boron and aluminum oxide? They manufacture SiC stones as well. DM

Peters: okay cool. I actually just found a metallic Cbn 50 grit stone.

Jll346: okay I'll check that site out.

Deadboxhero: yes, I just bought some rbd stones. But they don't come in 50 or 120 grit so I needed other ones too.

Willc: yeah I think I'm getting similar ones to those. I'm going to order a drill stop collar on my next ep order.

Thanks guys,

Bo
