Boron Carbide Coating: Not Impressed

I ordered a Ray Kirk Lil Blue II a few months ago, and received it in December. At this point, Ray was interested in trying out Bodycote's BC coating, and I was too, so I told him to go ahead and have my blade coated. I took the knife on a recent trip to Florida, and have just now unpacked it from my backpack. I am disappointed to notice that the handle is covered with fine speckles of rust. The knife is new enough, and has not been used hard enough, to have worn off any of the coating, and in fact the edge shows perhaps less corrosion than the coated handle. This was a scuba diving trip, and a fairly rainy week on Key Largo, however the knife was not used in salt water, nor left in the wet. If Mr. Kirk or someone from Bodycote would care to examine the knife, I have not polished off the rust.

As a point of comparison, I had a Sean Perkins A-2 Kerver packed in with it in the same bag, and it showed less corrosion, even on the handle which was sticking out of the leather sheath, so I do not believe the sheath (kydex on the boron carbide coated knife) was a factor in protecting the Kerver.

Interesting. I remember reading in all of the posts on the BC coating, that as a vapor deposition coating, though it provides excellent abrasion resistance, it can ba porous and not provide a significant degree of corrosion protection. To do that required a precoating with chromium (hard chromed), then boron carbide. That or I believe they were working on a process to achieve the same overall thickness in coating, but in >30 layers, which would probably not leave any through and through porocity.

I guess what I'm getting to, is that I'm not surprised, considering you were expecting the BC coating to do something it really isn't designed to do. It's more for abrasion resistance than corrosion protection.

Sorry to hear your knife is rusting though, :( and please anyone, feel free to correct me if the above is incorrect.

According to my emails from Mr. Kirk, that was in fact the procedure used. Your post makes me wonder if the hard-chroming was omitted. Thanks for the input Cedric.

Burke;
I'm really surprised to hear you've encountered rusting or corrosion on the knife that Ray Kirk made for you and was coated with Boron Carbide.Last year Bodycote processed more then 70,000 knife blades
and this is only the second I've heard of with rusting problems.

A couple of questions I have to help determine what may have caused this. What material is the blade made of and second did Ray request the Chromium layer under the Boron Carbide.

Cedric is correct in stating that Boron Carbide provides excellent abrasion resistance,These coatings are porous in nature and provide little corrosion without the chrome under-layer.

Last week I received corrosion test results back on a Kershaw
1550 Blackout coated with Chromium,Boron Carbide & Tech12 the testing shows no sign of rust after 100 hours of Salt-Spray.

Burke I would like very much for you to ship the blade back to Bodycote for our review.Maybe you can contact me Via Email for our Fed Ex account number for the return shipping. I can have our Lab look at the blade to help determine if in fct there is a chrome layer.

Hi Darrell, thanks for your offer. The knife is made of 52100; Mr. Kirk told me that it was to be coated with the chrome underlayer, but I'm not sure whether or not it actually was. I would be happy to mail the knife to you; I will be in touch via email.

darrel is a great guy to deal with and i'm sure he will resolve this matter to the customers satisfaction.........

Darrel,

I have a question regarding this. I currently have a blade on order that is scheduled for boron carbide coating. The blade is 154CM and will have a mirror finish. Would you recommend the chrome coating as well? I am looking for both corrosion resistance and that shiny "black chrome" look.

Body-Cote has the knife, stripped off the old coating, and is recoating it and returning it.

I haven't had an answer yet as to whether or not the blade received the hard-chrome coating (which was requested by Mr. Kirk) in addition to the boron carbide, though I have asked several times in my emails.

As a side note, Body-Cote apparently is now recommending a Tec12 coating in addition to the boron carbide, as hard-chroming alone may develop cracks due to its extreme hardness, resulting in rust.

Hmmm
The blades I'm having coated are ATS-34, so technically I'm not that worried about the rust, but cracks are never nice...
I'll have to ask about the Tec12 (what is it?) coating...
Thanks,
Rob
