just wanna find out pple, is the extra charge on the black chive worth it?

from my experience i dont usually go for coatings on knives coz they tend to wear out ater sometime.

im considering getting the black chive but if the coating wont hold then ill just get the normal one.

but i have to say that the black chive does look very swweeet..

also ve heard that there is a matte black chive? where can i get this, if possile wont anyone post pictures on the different chives available. thanks

As far as I know there are three versions of the Chive. The standard (regular) finish, the polished chive and the boron coated chive. The boron coating is very durable as I hear it, not like the powder coat on a lot of knives these days. The saleswoman at the knife store that I bought my bc coated chive from told me about a customer who tested his out by throwing it on the ground but failed to damage the coating. If you are choosing between the polished chive and the boron coating then I'd say go with the boron. The only reason (besides the most obvious price factor) I would go with the regular finish is the fingerprint problem on the two other ones. The fingerprint thing actually gets a little on my nerves, but it probably wouldn't bother most people. Hope that helps.

Zenghost, don't forget the new "rainbow" Chive!

Oh yeah...how could I have forgotten that? :D Unfortunately it seems the Rainbow Chive won't be out for awhile...looks cool though.

Rainbow Chive thread here.

I've been carrying my black chive for something like 6 months now, it doesn't have a single scratch on it, still looks awesome. Note that I carry it in a pocket by itself, so I don't have change rubbing up against it. But with most other black coatings, mere use causes a lot of wear and scratches on the coatings, and that isn't the case with the black chive in my experience.

That said, I don't think the coatings adds anything to the knife other than cool looks. If you don't care about that, just go uncoated.

Boron carbide is incredibly tough. It is the only coating that I find acceptable as it does not cover up the look of the steel nearly as bad as the other coatings do. I will never pay more for a knife with a coating on the blade, but if I were to do so, boron carbide is the only coating for which I would do so.

Yeah I'm not a coating fan myself.., but I have put a few pieces with Boron Carbide coating to the test.., and it is great stuff!!
