Bos heat treat question

I've read nothing but good things on this forum about Paul Bos.

I've also read that he accepts other makers blades for heat treat, even small orders (single blades, too).

I would expect that demand for his service would be quite high.

My question is, what is the approximate turn around time to have a small batch of blades heat treated by Paul?

I'd really like to have some blades heat treated by Paul and would like to know what to expect (for planning purposes).

Thank You

Steve,i'm not speaking for Paul on this, his prices used to be $60.00 for a batch of 20 blades.Blades over a certain length would have an additional .50/in.,you can certainly send in smaller batches, but they would fall under the base price,ie:60.00/lot.You might also want to check with other makers in your area who use Pauls services, and perhaps they could include your blades with theirs, that might save you a few $.Paul does excellent work,BTW these prices may not be exactly correct, just close.Hope this helps a little.

i use paul's services for all of my stainless steel blades. ats-34 and 440c. he is more than fair on pricing. and turn around time is around two weeks or less. he can get jammed up like anyone.but that is all he does is heat treat work, and second to none.

Paul Bos is incredible! Awesome HT guy!!!!!

For smaller batches, it is $12 a blade I believe, including cryo, plus $2.50 handling and then the shipping back to you. 6 blades or more is $60 for the same steel, I believe $75 for mixed batches of different steels.

I am working on some to go to him shortly, hopefully in the next few weeks. What steels are you using, when will you have them done? I can throw them in with my batch if you want, im using D2 and ATS right now. Bos only does air hardening steels, not steels like O-1, 1095, 1084, etc. But with the steels he does do, he is a master!!

Almost forgot, his turn around time is quick...i have gotten some of my stuff back a little over a week from when it was shipped out, prob about 10 days or so priority mail.

Always think of your fellow knife makers as partners in the search for the perfect blade, not as people trying to compete with you and your work!

Thanks for all the helpfull info.

No blades ready at this time but thanks for the offer to include them with your shipment.

I'm very pleasantly surprised to hear that such a highly regarded service is so accessable.

I am planning on having my blades heat treated by Paul when they are ready.

Thanks again.

It is very unusual to have a fine craftsman like Paul Bos so readily available. My general experience is that all good things pass--much too quickly. Try and take advantage of this opportunity sooner, rather than later.
