Anyone know what BOSS stands for? No, not that BOSS. :p ;) :D

But this BOSS. The
Boulder Outdoor Survival School!!!!
I've been following the series, "Digging for the Truth" on the Learning Channel and started wondering about Josh Bernstein, the show's host and adventurer, and what his credentials were so I Googled him and found a reference to the BOSS so I Googled it and I'm really glad I did!
If you don't do anything else please click on and check out the Gallery on the BOSS Website....
They have several subjects in their gallery with some really great pix portraying the great Utah countryside.
It appears all of the courses are really something with the 14 and 28 day courses being even extra special and I wish I were in good enough shape physically to participate, I'd be there like a Goose on a June bug!!!!;)
Another thing I found very interesting is their online store.
They are what the say they are in being a minimal equipement carry school and it was interesting to me that the knife sold through their store is, their words a: "Frosts Tri-flex Laminated Knife with Plastic Sheath."
They have the following in their ad for the knife.... "NOTE: If you do not already have a wilderness knife, we STRONGLY encourage you to buy the Mora Triflex. For $14, you won't find a better blade."

That tells me the school has to be a real deal. What better knife indeed!
Most all of us here love the Scandi style knives and recognize that when you get right down to it little more, if any, is needed as a real survival knife.:D

Yvsa,
14 bucks? I know where you can get the same knife for three dollars less, you do too. ;)

You betcha Sarge!!!! ;) :D

I was just impressed that BOSS wasn't escalating the price to $50.00 or some other ungodly price like so many organizations are wont to do.:(
It just seems to me that a lot of folks that go to similar kinds of schools aren't really familiar with the outdoors or outdoor equipment and get ripped off unmercifully. They go to experience some sort of epiphany or spiritual enlightenment or such so that they can brag to their friends about their experiences.
It's good to see that BOSS isn't one of those kinds of schools. :D

Sarge I guess you mean Ragnar's place, Ragweed Forge? He says Hi by the way. I ordered the pig sticker, an opaki, and a small Opinel knife on Friday. I'm pretty excited as some of these knives come highly recommended (by you). Where on his site are these Mora Triflex knives?

I hear what you're saying Yvsa. 90% of fishing lures are designed to catch fisherman. The 10% that reliably catch fish are styles that have been around and worked well for ages. Despite humankind's incessant thirst for glitz and gizmos, largemouth bass have themselves not evolved to keep up with us. :D

Scroll down and you'll find it. ;)
By the way, the Okapis have to sort of grow on you, but I can attest that they're excellent knives for the money. As for the Opinels, they're just plumb hard to beat, simple, lightweight, easy to sharpen, and they cut like blue blazes. With a Mora #1, an Opinel folder, and a good axe and saw, you'd be ready to go tame the wilderness.

Ok I found it. I have been looking at thes Mora knives. I didn't order one yet though. I just love reading his site.

I've gotta get pics taken and show you my newest Po-Boy. Its pukko like. I spent a LOT of time on the handle. Its perty.

You got that right Sarge! And on top of it all the Opilel is one of the few manufactured knives that come with a convex blade and the only folder I know of that does. :D

Would you prefer the EriKsson, or the Frosts #1 Mora knife I wonders?

Andy, I've owned and used plenty of both, you can't go wrong with either. That said, my personal preference is the Erikssons for inexpensive, hard use working knives. I will admit that the Frost laminated blades are probably tougher and easier to sharpen, but I've never had a problem with either issue using the Erikssons. Heck, get one of each, keep the one you like best and give the other one to a friend. He/she will definitely thank you. :D

i've been trying to find these:
http://www.knifecenter.com/kc_new/store_detail.html?s=FINNM571

at a more reasonable (like $8 or less) price. no markings on the knife, but the sheat says "marttiini". it looks a lot like a mora #545 on ragnar's site, but isn't. REALLY like this knife, tons.

i have one that i use for everything, and 10 seconds with a dull piece of 2000 grit emory paper puts it back to shaving sharpness. oh my yes. got one at a show a couple years ago and it's all i can do to rave about it.

any clues?

in other news, the kellam puukkos are darned nifty, hell, any puukko is. a lot of the stuff ragnar carries - great prices and super tempty :) sharpest knives i've ever seen out of the box, and they stay that way a long time.

Knife and sheath are black, comes with THERMOPLASTIC SHEATH WITH DRAIN HOLE AND BELT LOOP.THESE ARE AWSOME FIELD KNIVES GREAT FOR SKINNING OR FILLETING, PREFERED BY MANY SURVIVAL INSTRUCTORS AND TRAPPERS WHO NEED A NO-FRILLS SHARP KNIFE IN THE FIELD.GREAT KNIFE FOR THE MONEY!! These knives have only a primary bevel which is traditional for scandinavian knives, this makes the knife easy to sharpen, and lets you keep the correct angle by simply laying the knife bevel flat against your sharpener.

This is the topic that sets off absolute wars at the Wilderness and Survival Skills Forum. Some people cannot seem to discuss knife choices without slinging the brown stuff. "Ancient" disputes rise to the top and folks start denouncing what someone said once, or might say again, or "really mean" -- even if they didn't say in in that thread - or even said something entirely different. (Agree with me, will you, you, you . . . . . [] )

Moi prejudice? Whenever I hear or read a statement that a particular knife is the "best, I have to wonder. One best knife for all people and all tasks? One knife that will even passibly do "all" tasks?

I love my Mora 2000. A cutting machine. I take on every car campout, or something close to it from Helle or IIssakki.

Try to use it to baton through oak, hornbeam, beech, or (God forbid) elm in an emergency when I'm clumsy (Well, clumsier), cold, rattled, hungry, thirsty, sick? No. I want something harder to break. I might even want . . . wait . . . wait . . . a khukuri! :D

LOL.:D :D Still if you're into knives (I am) and someone recommends a knife that only costs 11 dollars...why not give it a try. I ordered a #1 and a triflex and another Opinel. Can't resist. Should be here tomorrow. Sarge, you were right about the Opinels. SWEET. What a simple design. Good for a first knife as there is no dangerous spring too. My nephew cut his hand 10 minutes after I gave him his first pocket knife due to the spring. Could have saved myself 40 dollars and LOTS of hearing his mother whine.

They're here and both shaved right out of the mailer.

The only other "large karda type" knife to do that was my mini-bushman by Cold Steel. The Gerber my grandson bought me did too, but it was a folder.

Thanks, Guys, for the recommendation.

This is a very interesting thread. but it raises a few questions.

The Triflex type knife doesn't mention what type of tang and construction it has. It can't have a full tang since the tang is not visible. The only options left are partial (short) tang or perhaps it could go almost to the end of the handle.

Aren't partial tangs weaker than full or rat tail tangs thet go through the knife pommel? Shouldn't a survival knife be the strongest possible with a full tang of some sort?

Is the handle glued on or molded on?

Thanks, Steve

Steve, the handles are molded on to a partial tang that's wider than your usual stick tang, runs about 3/4 the length of the handle, and has scallops cut into the edges of it that the plastic fills into when the handle's molded on. Absolutely can't bust the silly things, only way to get one off is with a hacksaw. Ask me how I know. ;)
