I haven't heard a lot about this Busse? How is it in regards to chopping or in an overall comparison to the sfno which seems so famous? Thanks for any input. Not yet a Busse owner, but looking for one as I head backcountry and canoing. Looking for something that can baton, carve, chop, and filet if necessary. Granted, nothing will work like a filet knife. Plus the wife is scared of Bears, so she actually thinks me carrying a bigger knife will help us if a rogue bear comes forth!

This knife is meant as a fighter, not really a camper. For what you describe you are better off getting an NMSFNO from the company store.

The HG55 is not a chopper, it doesnt compare favorably at all to the SFNO for what you want, which is built completley different. The SFNO is larger, has more belly, different handle style, different blade shape.

On the filet note, I use a thin knife to filet with. Neither of these knives would be good filet knife imo. However the blade style on the HG55 is better suited for it. I would get the NMSFNO and a 2nd knife for fileting.

Hi rutmi01. Welcome.

No one knows how the HG55 LE compares at this time as it was just recently released on the Busse Combat site and has not yet begun to ship. I would guess that it would do pretty well in the tasks you listed.
You may also want to look into the Swamp Rat and Scrap Yard brands (sister lines to Busse) for an all-around camp blade. The discontinued Swamp Rat Camp Tramp might be just what you are looking for.

Good luck in your quest!

I'd get the NMSFNO if I was you, I use it for my camp knife and it handles most every task I throw at it with utter ease. Carry a decent folder, hint hint Jerry, for small tasks or fine work and you should be set.

As for bear fighting either get a NMFBM or wait for the Killa Zilla, if you got the muscles to handle one of those easily then no bear would dare mess with you.

The HG 55's blade is not as wide as the SFNO.
For all around camp/survival knife I would go with the NMSFNO also:thumbup:

Thanks for your advice on this fellas. I thought the HG55 looked a bit more military. Plus I didn't realize Busse had a separate store with the NMSFNO. I realize the big unflexing type knives aren't meant for filleting, but I figured I'd ask if anyone's used it for such a task. Regarding the Bears....ya I don't want to engage those fellas. I've scared a few off the trail before, but never had to lock up. If I did, I probably wouldn't be typin right now. My dad has a buddy who was crazy enough to go bear huntin with a bow and arrow along with his dog and knife. He pulled it off..black bear not brown.

Easy, an sfno for each of you to wear on your right hip, and an hg55 for each left hip. Ya know, god gave you two sides for a reason! :D

Ha, I ended up purchasing the black on black NMSFNO. Looking forward to the company store sending it!

Nice choice, here is a pix to drool at while you wait for the mailman:thumbup:

Wow, those are some beauties. The Satin is unbelievable. Is the satin supposed to be a collectors item? Or do a lot of people put them to use as well?

Congrats bro I just got my first too Saturday same Knife different color... Just wanted to say, for your safty, if you run into a pissed off bear with a knife, run or pull a 44 mag, they got 5 Busse on each hand and move a lot quicker.

Oh ya, Bears are the highest in the land food chain. To be honest, most Black Bears are pretty curious and get scared off after you make some noise and throw stuff at em. I tell the wife whatever will make her happy so she'll get outdoors. It's going to take awhile to convince her to move to Montana.
