I have a really close friend signing up, and I'd like to send a good knife with him. I was thinking of a combat grade boss jack.

I assume there are color restrictions on what can be carried... Would desert sage with tan micarta work? Or would something else be a better choice?

Color combo is fine, but the knife not so much! something like a TankBuster would be better.

id say give him something that you wouldn't mind if it grew legs and walked away. light weight and carry options

I'm not a soldier but I believe the CG Boss Jack would be a great weapon for the sandbox. Nice and light with a lot of blade for the size and plenty thick for prying at 0.22".

The CG Boss Jack will make a great combat knife. .22 thick. Convex grind. Lots of handle, exposed tang, still plenty "stabby".

In asking for feedback from people with "combat" experience they all recommended no choil option for my cousin, who is a Marine. They recommended this based on not wanting anything to "hang up" when cutting netting, webbing in a hurry, often with gloved, or cold hands under stress.

He sure loved it when it showed up (thanks to the generosity of donors who pitched in on here!).

The Tank Buster will be a better chopper, but not necessarily a better "combat" knife. It is thicker, heavier, and less "stabby". So there are trade offs!

I would love to have either, but then again, I am not a soldier.

The Boss Jack will be lighter than the TankBuster, which means a lot when some one is already toting around up to 70 LBS of gear, and even a light, "jump out of the truck when we get there" set of gear is pushing 20-30 lbs by the time you add in rifle, mags, flack vest with trauma plates, helmet, goggles, gernades, water etc.

I just went with muddy/tan. As long as it is not a flashy cromed out affair, it shoudl not be an issue color wise. Now, over all length may be a factor as to what they are allowed to carry by rules.

I have given 3 boss jack's to deploying soldiers. 2 are back and had nothing but good things to say. It is worth a serious look.

A long time ago I found myself serving in the Army. A Boss Jack would have been a great piece of gear to have back then :)

DSF (not sure about the choil option though)? You can get a .189" or .25" Tank Buster w/ or w/o a choil (a lot of options for this one), maybe even a Hell/Mud Razor (although I'm not sure if it was ever offered w/o a choil).

make sure the sheath is molle compatible & jump rated.
MOLLE is a requirement for ground pounders, jump rating makes it less likely to jostle loose when taking a vehicle through rough terrain.
And I agree it's a great pattern for duty carry - not too long, not too short, and plenty thick to take all kinds of abuse it will encounter both in a combat zone and in camp.

Thanks for the responses... pretty much exactly what I was thinking.

Order placed... I went no-choil Muddy/Tan Canvas. Decided to go with Muddy over the Desert Sage just incase he changes his mind and I wind up keeping it. I like Muddy more.

Great choice. Really, the color of the finish is not a big deal. Most of it is covered by the sheath.

Muddy/Tan is one of my all time favorite color combos as well.

The only jump-rated sheath I can come up with is spec ops... the combat master short version says it fits 6" blades, I wonder if that would be a good choice.

There are a couple threads around here recently saying the short combat master was perfect for the boss jack. Good choice on knife. I agree.

Also, you can make a kydex sheath "jumpable" with the right additions to the kydex. A riser with straps would do the trick.

The Boss Jack is a great choice. My whole platoon is outfitted with them and they are performing great. Not too heavy and not too small, great size for nearly every task. I say go for it!

We all have "Mashed Cat" kydex sheaths that were made for tec-lock attachments and they are perfect. Nearly everyone of us has it velcro'd in behind our magazine pouches though. A much more stream-lined way to carry it, you hardly notice it's there.

That's awesome! How did it come to be that your whole platoon has BJs and mashcats?

Boss jacks are good steak knives, but a bit skinny and small feeling in the hand for what I would consider a "combat knife" Here are some really good choices:
Tank buster is a great mid size knife, that is virtually indestructible. The smallest I would go would be a BATAC, which makes a great knife to have on your LBE, but it still is large enough to do some damage or break open an MRE crate :). Satin Jack TAC, Hell razor, are also great knives, My personal favorite is the SFNO, a great all around knife, enough blade to chop well, yet small enough to be fast in the hand. My son carried a BATAC, then a mini Mojo, but eventually used a Gerber LMF II because he was afraid the expensive Busse's would get messed up. :), I told him that's what they were made for

Yes, it would be pretty much ideal. You have bigger/heaveir knives but then weight becomes an issue. The Boss jack is a good generla purpose blade that would do well for fighting too.
