I first heard of Busse's through Shomer-Tec, which featured the Basics and (I think) the Ergos for a while. I put the name in the back of my head and saved it for later.

In 2002 or 2003 I bought a Satin Jack from bussecombat.com because it was about the right size and at the time was the only straight-handled model available (I think ergos were for sale then).

I loved that knife, I beat it senseless, but hated the choil and the ropecut handles that dug into my hands like sharp plastic.

I sold it off and went through a phase of buying and selling Busses. I ended up with only a few, heavily modded knives. I like them but have always wished Busse would just make a better SJ.

I stumbled on the BJ when casually browsing the forums, and immediately knew Busse had made THE replacement for the SJ.

Shallow rope cuts in the center only, no choil, bead-blasted finish and Bo-hi to reduce blade weight, the BJ is damn near perfect. I also like that you can get no choil, a small choil or large choil, coated or not, G10 or micarta, depending on preference.

The BJ is definitely the Busse for simple users who don't want anything fancy, obtrusive, or uncomfortable.

My prediction is that it will become a regular offering, with multiple options that may even surpass the Tankbuster in quantity and variation.

I may be wrong, but I can't see why Jerry would throw his best model on the ash heap of history, forever relegated to niche collectors who can't afford to use them due to their extreme secondary market prices. Of course we all know that's inevitable, but we need a serious go at this model before it happens...

Oh yeah! I love mine!!!!

I gotta agree with you bro. The small choil Boss Jack is my favorite Busse of all time. It packs very well but is plenty large and stout enough to do whatever I need to do in my average outing in the woods. Sure, if I need to chop a tree down I'll grab an FSH or something larger but for average tasks, the Boss Jack is perfect for me. It's the first new Busse I have bought in over two years.

I for one, like the BJ a lot, but I have to admit....when holding my SJ in one hand, and the BJ in the other, I would have to go with my SJ any day. Everyone is different, and i understand that the rope cut handles aren't for everyone, but for me, there is no other. The BJ is very nice however, and the smoother handles are nice too. But, the feel that my SJ has is just incomparable, when in MY hand......so I would have to respectfully disagree..But, Congrats on your new love, and enjoy. just my .02

I love the lines of the new BOSS Jack, and had the DCBB Proto for a day or two. For me, it was just too thick. IMHO a 6" blade does not need to be 0.22" thick. Some of us dream of an Anorexic BOSS Jack.

I showed amazing restraint not getting a BOSS Jack until the ganzaa. No choil, no fuller and satin is too damn perfect. Super excited to get it!

I loved mine, but at the time wanted a Basic 11 more so I sold it to buy a Basic 11. I just didn't care for the DC finish and the fuller all that much. If they're released through the factory I will most likely buy another, either satin or coated.

I'm just happy the index finger was made to be taller. the original sj was like holding it with your rear 3 fingers only, there was almost nothing to grip in the center when making a fist. Which is fine for the most part cause you don't normally hold it like that when using it unless your doing power cuts when shaving wood, but it was always a problem for me. felt like it was constantly slipping backward in my hand.

I captured an opportunity to buy a Boss Jack/choil at the Blade Show and bought it on impulse, it was my first Busse knife. When I got home and starting messing with the knife I had one of those, "How have I lived without this knife?" enduring moments. Now I have several Busse knives and that B Jack continues as my favorite. 'Just feels like a perfect fixed blade for me.

Boss Jacks i like them all old and new. But a slimmer one would also be nice for hunting, skinning type work. ;)

Never had an issue with Gen III handles causing me any sort of pain.

The original SJ is just about as perfect a knife as I can imagine. The Boss Jack seems like a nice knife, I haven't had the pleasure of handling one yet but I can tell just by looking that it couldn't replace the SJ as my favorite Busse!!!

I have to agree that it is an improvement. Would I like thinner stock. Yes. The simple omission of the choil he made this a better knife for all of us who hate choils on shorter blades. Of course only buuse fans would call a 6 inch satin Jack a short knife. Come on Jerry bring on the anorexic boss Jack. That would take away most of the argument here. Plus at normal prices guys might actually use theirs. Who wants to beat up 800 dollar plus knife when you can basically beat up the same knife and still have500 dollars in your pocket.

I agree. The only two Busse's I would buy at this time would be a thinner Boss Jack, or thinner Boss Street.
.150 on the Boss Street, and .170 on the Jack would be sweet.

Don't disagree with you. You could say that about most of the busse line. I know guys fall all over themselves with those thick GW's and the Off Duty and I don't see it. I just got a Boss Jack though and think it will be very good even though it is thicker than I prefer. I have the no choil version and it seems great for my use. Buy Brown has some kydex on the way and I want to try it out camping as an all rounder. If Jerry makes the same no choil, satin or DC, with thinner stock I would be in for those for sure. Wasn't the original and majority of the SJ's .25? I thought the LE's were the thinner ones. If so, is there any real (significant) difference between the BJ and the original SJ? I can't seem to figure out any real difference and that knife has always been the elusive one for me, so the BJ is just about perfect and improved with the option of no ridiculous choil (for me anyway).

Well, mine is stripped, but it is definitely 3/16" thick. Im not sure how many of these are out there, as its not an LE. I love the fact that it is NOT too thick, it is PERFECT for me.

BTW, anyone know how many of these thinner ones were made?

I have two of the thinner SHSJ ( 3/16),a thick one (.25) and micarta BJ( just under .25) the shsj just feel more balanced in the hand and not so blade heavy as the BJ, the full convex BJ is a little better but still forward weighted
