Can anyone help a new brother out?

I am looking at a Boss Jack to mid-companion my coming ASHBM and AMS. Anyone have a photo of a muddy and tan canvas Boss Jack, preferably with full-size choil? This is just to motivate me and keep me droolin', so no big deal.

However, on a more substantive and decision-helping note, I have seem some comments about the relatively small/thin size of the handle on the BJ. My hands are on the larger size (L or XL glove), though I don't tend to favor a really thick grip. Still, and it is asking a lot, but could anyone give me major and minor/largest and smallest circumference measurements on a Boss Jack? No rush and I would really appreciate it since I don't have the opportunity to handle one at present prior to purchasing.

My thanks in advance and cheers,

Ken

Garth put hand shaped black canvas handles with black liners on my Boss Jack LE at the Custom Shop and it's plenty thick now, and very comfy:)

Gusbuster, my thanks for that photo, idea, and tip! Looks like a really good way to go if I don't dig the feel of the regular grip!
Cheers

I have L size hands and had liners put in both LEs. Both mine are choiless and I left the texture on. I even had liners put in my CG choiless BJ and liked it a lot.
But really, it's an easy operation if you decide you don't like them.

You mentioned that you want one with a choil so here's my 2 cents:

If you really will use the choil a lot don't put liners in it. The step down from the micarta to the steel with liners ends up being pretty steep and not very comfortable. Without liners in using the choil is great.

Your other option would be to HAVE liners, but to get the slabs handshaped like Gusbuster did (above) which will take the overall diameter down a skotch. About the thickness of liners themselves.

The downside of handshaped is that it can get slippery if you are doing field dressing or other messy task, but to each their own on that score.

And here's some more Jack pics! :)

MMMMM MMMM MMMMM.....those are 3 great looking Blades....This style lends itself to Choilless design and that middle Custom Shop is the Bees Knees....:thumbup:thumbup:

"Gus" that is Sweet Blade Also!!!!

Great pictures guys, I'm sure there are more out there though. Keep them coming!

Tan & Muddy, no choil though!

Just for more drool

I have medium hands, usually buy large gloves though, I love the Boss Jack grip.

I've got a tan/muddy too, but no choil like Salvo.

I have large hands, wear large gloves... sometimes lean toward XL. Meaty though, not just long fingers. I don't usually like really big knife handles, I really like the Boss Jack/Street handles.

Boss Jack is just what the name says BOSS! I love mine though I do find it a bit thin handled for my paws. But I didn't buy it for chopping and most small tasks you don't really need to squeeze the handle to hard.

A big thanks All for posting the great pics! Your educated user input is especially appreciated, too. You are changing my mind on how to go initially as I can always add the liners if desired after trying it out.

Salvo, a special thanks for posting me a pic of a muddy/tan BJ! With or without choil, that's the first I have seen and only makes me want to complete this set all the more. Sweet.

Demonic, that middle 'un is one truly sweet and WICKED lookin' saber sticker! Wowzuh! And thanks for the thoughtful feedback on the choil and spacers. Yeah, I really do tend to use choils on mid-sized blades quite a bit (heck, on small ones, too), so I will wait and see how it feels first. Much appreciated insight there.

Now I just gotta find one!

I have a large choil and no-choil proto and a CG. They feel pretty good in hand. All dimensions on the protos match the CG's except thickness. The CG I have is .231, and the proto's are .213 on the large choil version and .219 on the non-choil version.

Not a great photo, but you get the idea.

Ish, I'm pretty sure that all of your Boss Jack's are Proto's regardless of how they are labeled. The coated one you have is certainly not the officially released CG and you can pretty much assume the difference in thickness is just because of the coating.

As far as circumference of the handle, my coated model runs just under 3" in the narrowest areas to about 3 1/4" in the thicker areas. I normally wear Large gloves and it fits comfortably in hand for me. If you find it a bit narrow for you, then as suggested liners are an easy fix.

Hope this helps,

Les.

I have small hands and the Boss Jack's handle does feel small to me. The Swamp Rat Ratmandu is perfect for my grip. The Boss Jack handle at its thickest point is .705", The Ratmandu is actually thinner at .675". The difference for me with the Ratmandu is the width which is at 1.3", the Boss Jack is 1.09". These measurments were at the widest and thickest spots. I know this was not the knife you wanted to compare to, but it's a popular one. Here are some pics of my grip.

Thanks for the measurements and feedback, Extrastout. Exactly the sort of thing I needed.
My palm is 4.25" x 4.25" and fingers are 3.5" but as I said, I generally like a smaller grip. This is good - I can now measure a few of my good-feelin' users and compare.

Nice knife!
